I ordered yahoo hosting (starter) two weeks ago, so far so good.

Basically, I think it is okay. Probably it's partly because I have nerver bother to contact yahoo support till now (Folks are talking how bad yahoo's tech supports are)

yahoo has pre-installed many useful applications, like phpbb, word press, moveabletype, gallery, poll system, phpmyadmin etc; yahoo also has pre-installed very easy-to-use web pages builders, which is very good for beginners.

It is very easy to activate and deactivate services like moveabletyple, wordpress, etc. The good news is you do not need to worry about download, upload, extract issues, yahoo takes care of these.

Another good news is yahoo's backup. yahoo backups your website frequently, though I do not very need this feature.

It also has many offers for potential adwords, yahoo paid search customers.

The bad news is yahoo does not support shell access and does not support scp. It means you have to extract a compressed file locally and upload all those files, which takes a long time. yahoo provides a remedy, perl Compress: Zlib module. You may either write your own perl code or download one like fileman to do compress and extract tasks on server-side. But is still not convenient.

My conclusion, yahoo hosting is good, as far as I know. I also hope yahoo can preinstall more open source applications, like phpadsnew, sugarcrm, ez publish, etc.

Hi Frimon86,

i think yahoo hosting is good so far. But I must point out my website is just a simple website, a site targeted for local universities and colleges students. The traffic is not high and I do not need too many fancy features. Basically, moveabletype + phpbb can do all jobs.

regarding yahoo's moveabletype, it seems to be an unlimitted weblogs and unlimitted authors version.

Yahoo support:

php 4.3.11 and those fuctions: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/webhosting/php/php-33.html

perl 5.8.7 and those modules:http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/webhosting/perl/perl-21.html

For advanced users, I do not recommend yahoo. For example, Yahoo supports HTML:Template module but it is a very simple template module. For complicated template issues, it is not enough and Template:Toolkit might be required.

Heeeeeeeey tiger0516! Thanks for letting me know, I was looking through their website and found them ok overall but I was still bubleing with if I want to sign up with them or not. I got a couple of websites I want to build but they are pretty complex for the most part, so I appreciate that tip buddy! You take it easy now!

Thanx for sharing your initial impressions. I note that your site is simple and quite new, and you haven't yet dealt with their support... :)

Also, we are curious about what domain you have with them..............

Glad you are having a good time with Yahoo, hopefully you don't have to contact the technical support dept too many times as it is meant to be slow, but with a big company perhaps that can be expected

I have my company domain name with them, and I've been pretty satisfied with them (I'd give them an A-).

As far as support goes, I really thought the support is/was great! The first time I needed to call them I had an issue regarding nameservers. After I got through the say this and enter this on the phone, I only waited about 3 minutes to speak with a suppor representative. She was very knowledgable, and knew exactly what she was doing.

I've never had any other reason to contact them, as my experience with them has been absolutely wonderful so far (about 6+ months).

Cheers,
-- Tim

As long as you don't experience problems with Yahoo, it is a very reliable host.

However, if you did run into problems, good luck finding the right support. I had problems with their php support, 401 error handling, etc. Their tech support couldn't be worse.

4tw.

i have my high-bandwidth site (approx 200gb/mo) with them and all has been well. their transfer speeds (which is most important to me, i deal with an impatient bunch for the most part...has been approx 390-450kbps) are fantastic.

i have yet to deal with their support (and don't expect to).

if you actually need the bandwidth, know your way around hosting a bit, are using the service to push large files to a large amount of people, and do not run scripts, they are a good route to travel.

I know this is an older post, but I'm currently working on a site hosted with Yahoo. I even suggested the client switch to Yahoo. They had good reviews, they're not going to disappear in a week, they had a promo for credits for Yahoo & Google ads, etc..
(previous host was fine except the actual uptime was about 90-95%, which isn't good for a business site)

However, I've grown very frustrated trying to do simple things.

1) Creating email accounts
- If a user wants to have POP access & Webmail access, they have to create a Yahoo ID first. You have to send them an invite in which they can activate their account. For the average non-tech person out there, creating a yahoo account & activating the new @yourdomain.com account, is a chore. I had to help most of them I'm working with. Some still haven't setup their account.
The users shouldn't have to do all this crap.

Most hosting companies, you just click 'Add new email', enter the email & pass & it's done.

2) Formmail script
- I had a typical form2mail script. It worked fine on the previous host. After 3 hours of tinkering with it & going through Yahoo's FAQ of how to do this, I still haven't figured it out. You have to 'setup' the 'php mail' feature, which I did, but it still does not work.
I'm now waiting for an email back... but I'll probably have the client end up changing hosting yet again.

3) Google & Yahoo credits
- On their plan, it said "$100 Yahoo search marketing & $50 Google Ads credits". We have accounts with Yahoo & Google for advertising already, a big part of why I suggested yahoo hosting.
I called about the credits & they say it only applies to new advertising accounts. I also emailed them after thinking about it some more. The plan was misleading & we should have gotten the credits. I never heard back.

That's all I have for now. I guess if you want a simple site, go for it. There are better hosts with cheaper plans though.
