View Full Version : 1and1.com cheapest domain?
Ketracel 03-17-2006, 10:47 PM Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy 3 or 4 domains. I want them to have privacy enabled (no pulbic whois info). I've searched around a bit and 1and1.com's domain price seems the best because it includes anonimity.
But I'm a bit nervous since I've read a lot of negative things about them as a company and as a host.
Could you offer any suggestions or comments re this? Any reason why I shouldn't go with them? Are their domain and hosting businesses separate enough, so to speak that it won't matter? are there other similar cheap domain registrars?
Thanks very much
Stan Marsh 03-18-2006, 07:05 AM Are you looking for 'cheap' registrar (and problems) or 'good' registrar (and secure domains)???
These doesn't come in pair...

Ketracel 03-18-2006, 02:22 PM Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I don't see what all the fuss is about 1and1.com. I just want to buy a few domains and hold them, for a long time. I don't want to switch, sell, or do anything funny with them, except just use them for websites. Why would a cheap domain seller be a problem in that case??! Maybe I'm naive. Anyway, I'll read the reviews on the link above and see what else is out there. Thanks again for your comments. Cheers
Ketracel 03-18-2006, 03:04 PM One more thing, apparently this domain by proxy thing is a joke. You don't own the domain but own a license to use it! And usually the registrar will fold like a wet napkin at the first hint of a letter/email re your identity. I'm not into anything illegal mind you, I just take my privacy seriously. That's why I'm looking for an alternative to the 'proxy' thing. I've found: hiddenregistration.com What do you guys think of them? Are they legit? Sounds good, but.. Anyone here use them or have any info on them? Thanks
rowdyplace 03-19-2006, 12:41 PM I use 1and1. I have recently purchased some domains from them as well as had them xfer some that I own from other providers. All I can say is that they are responsive, timley, professional, and they keep me happy.

NX-Harry 03-19-2006, 01:01 PM reading the reveiws, 1&1 sound extreamly poor for domain registration.
If you are just looking for JUST a domain where the web hosting is from a different providor, you want to look for a domain registrar which allows DNS control (able to change name servers).
NX-Harry 03-19-2006, 01:03 PM And btw, 1&1's .com domain names arn't cheapest in UK as advertised
RC22Fires 03-19-2006, 01:21 PM DO NOT use 1&1. All the answers why are right here:

Could not make real links, don't have 5 posts. Dumb system.
rowdyplace 03-19-2006, 01:26 PM Not tryng to start an international incident...
Just stating my personal experiences. I only use 1and1 for domain registration and dns management. This is working well for me.
I know nothing about their hosting. I am satisfied with their price for domain registration - $5.99 (us) for .com .net .org .us .name.
Their .info domains are free.
Richard 03-19-2006, 01:39 PM I've been double-charged and locked out many times while dealing with customer requests for the lowest possible domain price (using 1&1).
We use NameCheap now. You get what you pay for in this case.
penchod 03-19-2006, 04:55 PM I would recommend hellodomains.net , ive got a few domains with them from last few years and i cant fault them, they have excellent service at very reasonable prices check them out!
ihostfried 03-19-2006, 06:10 PM Ipower.com has the cheapest domains I know of but I use namesecure.
CH-TJ 03-19-2006, 06:39 PM Godaddy for sure, buy 3 and get free privacy....
highwirepcs 03-20-2006, 04:15 AM I highly recommend http://www.hostway.com . They offer following domain extensions: .com, .net, .biz, .name, .info, and more for only $6.95 a year. Their support is also very good. Response time is usually around 4-6 hours.
Carl Cooper 03-20-2006, 09:50 AM 1and1 are cheap as long as you stay with them for everything
we change £6.00 for a co.uk etc and £7.00 for a .com
