View Full Version : RAM prices skyrocketing.. AGAIN?
AcuNett 05-12-2002, 10:57 PM Well several months ago you could buy around 256ram for $29.95. Up till a week ago, that price went up to around $49.95. But now, look at this: http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=280702 $89.95/month!!
That's a 60 dollar difference from a few months ago.
Tim Greer 05-12-2002, 11:02 PM Shop somewhere else?
iamdave 05-12-2002, 11:08 PM Go on eBay, look for a guy named honestabememory. He has a 4000 rating. I bought my RAM for $90. 512 MB SD RAM.
ToastyX 05-12-2002, 11:46 PM $89.95/month? RAM has a monthly fee now? :( Just kidding. :D Force of habit? ;)

markblair 05-13-2002, 12:21 AM Shopping for memory at places like CompUSA and Best Buy will always be more expensive than anywhere else. I can still get memory for less than what was listed there.
viGeek 05-13-2002, 12:43 AM I buy all my computer components using www.pricewatch.com
last month i bought 512MB DDR Memory, for $125
I would definately try pricewatch to see what you come up with!

From time to time I've seen these two have some rather decent pricing on RAM, however you should always shop around of course.
Tim Greer 05-13-2002, 02:13 AM I usually go through tigerdirect or something like that and they've had pretty good prices for a while -- although I haven't looked in the last month or so.
Mester 05-13-2002, 06:10 PM i got my 512mb (sdram) for 40pounds in the summer when over in the UK. I'm glad I did :)
RAM is certainly up from when it bottomed out last year, but it has been creeping back down over the past couple weeks. Right now you can get 256 MB PC133 with FedEx 2nd Day shipping direct from Crucial for $56 (part number CT32M64S4D75). There are similar deals out there for DDR RAM too. It's always a good idea to shop around like Tim Greer and Chicken suggested.
Here is the weekly RAM price observation from Sharky Extreme (http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/WMPG/article.php/10706_1039011__2):Overall memory prices continue to decrease, which is certainly good news for consumers, especially those looking at upgrading DDR SDRAM. Competition and high PC2100 inventory levels seem to be the main factors of these lower prices this week, so there is no reason why we all can't hope for more good news next week. Do yourselves a favor and confirm the current price before making any purchase. Memory prices are volatile and while our weekly guide does illustrate overall trends, the actual dollar price could shift up or down quite quickly.

LOL true true ;).
What kind of RAM does honestabememory have and from what manufacturer?
Haven't gone to circuit city for over a year now, but I remember when they had these specials where a NIC card or a stick of ram cost around $15, but you got a $15 rebate ;)

sbrad 05-14-2002, 09:45 AM Ram's the cheapest I've seen it since it went up.
Wholesale, we're paying about $45 for name-brand 256mb. I'm sure others are getting it even cheaper, since we have a pretty small computer store.
ToastyX 05-14-2002, 10:48 AM Back in my day, 4 MB of RAM cost $200. :stickout

Let me guess.
You were also walking up hill both ways to school, in the snow. And it was 125 degrees outside, right?
hehe

Wanna hear something funny I remember using all my xmas money from the customers on my paper route to go to Costco and pay 100 bucks for an 1 meg 72pin SIMM module.. Now thats going way back.. Needless to say it was a big upgrade from my 640k stock RAM..
markblair 05-14-2002, 01:06 PM How about spending $250 for a 20MB (that's megabyte) hard drive. Those were the days when running MS-DOS 6.0 only took up a few megabytes and the rest of your applications took up no more than 10. You had plenty of extra space to play with. :D
AcuNett 05-14-2002, 09:26 PM heh I bought a DELL (no more tier-1 companies for me from now on building my own ;)) Dimension for 1400. 3 months later the same computer with DOUBLE the features for 700. You can just imagine how I felt. Now I feel I spent too much money to sell this 700mhz and buy a new one :bawling:
Justin Reel 05-15-2002, 02:11 AM I've been buying all my RAM from crucial.com for the past couple years and have been very happy. Great prices and I usually get my RAM within 2 days.
