View Full Version : 2U server - $500?
mas3000 05-12-2002, 10:14 PM I have yet another server configuration I'd like to know would work:)
I've gathered the parts I think will complete the system, please tell me what you think - will it work? Is it any good?

ECS K7S5A motherboard with AMD Athlon XP 1600+ 266FSB CPU & Fan- http://www.bzboyz.com/store/product1585.html
512MB PC133 Ram - http://www.upgradenation.com/51pc7ns168pi.html
Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM Hard Drive - http://www.l-buy.com/showitem.asp?item=HD-MX540S

I believe the cost would come out to be about $500. That seems pretty good and I hope that it's OK. Any comments?
Thanks
netacore 05-12-2002, 10:19 PM Don't even consider using a Maxtor drive in a server environment, they were not designed for that .. they will crash and burn
Your memory is weak, go for ECC
You better get a Volcano heatsink with some artic ice grease and slap it on that AMD!
By the way, http://newegg.com has better pricing :)
mlip129 05-12-2002, 10:20 PM Cheap ass...

mlip129 05-12-2002, 10:37 PM A good computer part seller I use is newegg.com they have great prices on everything.
mas3000 05-12-2002, 10:38 PM 1. That hard drive is 7200RPM, I just wrote it wrong.:D
2. What's wrong with PC133?
3. What's wrong with the motherboard?
WII-Aaron 05-12-2002, 10:39 PM ECS... run away... far away...

mlip129 05-12-2002, 10:42 PM If your going to get a motherboard that supports DDR you might as well get it since it will give you 10-15% faster performance. And I dont have to many problems with the motherboard since I have it and I have no problems with it but you could duo better. Spend $50 more and get some better hardware. You could probably build it for cheaper if you use newegg.com :)

And what motherboard do you think would be good at newegg.com(and reasonable)?
mlip129 05-12-2002, 10:47 PM Asus A7V266-C KT266A Chipset 266/200MHz FSB Motherboard - OEM - $76.00
AMD 1700+/266 FSB Athlon XP PROCESSOR CPU- OEM - $94.00
Crucial Micron 512MB 64x64 PC2100 DDR RAM, 184-Pin, CL=2.5-Unbuffered 2.5V, 6-Layers - $140.00
Your harddrive - $60
Your Cdrom - $33
Your Case - $179.00(I think you could do better but I'm lazy and didn't want to look)
$582 plus s&H plus some other stuff like a heatsink and fan etc...
mas3000 05-12-2002, 10:52 PM OK. You said Maxtor was not meant for servers? Who should I go with? Western Digital?
About the case, that's the best price I've seen. Do you really think you could beat that price?
I've always bought motherboard/cpu combos with fans. What does the heaksink do? What kind of fan should I get?
netacore 05-13-2002, 02:41 AM Pickup a seagate at newegg.com for the same price as your maxtor

By buying your parts from different suppliers you're going to pay more for shipping than if you were to buy everything from one source.. so even if the price of the case is higher elsewhere but other parts the same, check total shipping price and you'll see that it's probably cheaper over all.
apollo 05-13-2002, 10:39 AM I will not agree that the maxtor HDD is a bad idea. Either Maxtor or IBM nothing else if you need an IDE drive!
Hmm.... if I had to build the system, I would not buy ECS motherboard but rather something from Tyan or Asus (For tyan visit: http://www.tyan.com/products/html/athlon.html)
;)
JDTurbeville 05-13-2002, 04:51 PM Just curious from a newbie builder ...
What exactly are the other components he needs to complete? NICs, software, etc come to mind.

mas3000 05-13-2002, 05:12 PM Yeah, what's wrong with Maxtor hard drive?
What do you think a good high-quality server would come out to in price? Can you list the parts you'd buy?
mas3000 05-13-2002, 06:33 PM What's so bad about ECS?
And can anyone respond to my above post?

For motherboard, I will go with one that can take up to 2 or 4GB of memory. Also, lately I have been building server with Dual CPU capability. The motherboards that I have used are Supermicro 370DLR, ASUS CUR-DLS (both are based on ServerWorks 3.0 LE chipset, I believe). These motherboards are expensive, you will be spending around $400-$500 just for the motherboards. But this will bring you up to building a high end server with SCSI drives (the m/b have build in SCSI-3 controller) and registered memory (they can only take registered memory).
For building mid-range server which costs cheaper, I have a great experiences with Gigabyte GA-6VXDR7 (actually GA-6VXDR7-1). The m/b itself is based on VIA chipset, but it's still a great m/b. It supports Dual CPU, up to 2GB of unregistered memory, and build in Raid 0/1 controller (IDE). The price of th m/b is around $180 each, which I think is really nice considering it might be the only IDE motherboard that has 25 degrees slanted memory banks (so you have much more flexibility in chosing your memory modules)
As far as my servers are concerned, I will no longer use Intel i81x chipset, which I think is more suitable for personal PC use, not for server.
For HD, I don't really have any preferences ... I have been using Western Digital and IBM Desktar 60GXP, both have given me no problems whatsoever. I have also used Seagate ST30184 (if I am not mistaken) for my SCSI-3 10000 rpm drives, again ... a superb drives. Always make sure that your drives are at least 7200rpms ... don't go few bucks less for 5400rpms.
For memory, I have been using Kingston and Micron modules most of the time. Only used one Infineon modules. All of these are high quality memory that you can rely on.
Good Luck ...
cheers,
mas3000 05-13-2002, 07:24 PM Dektong, wouldn't that be pretty expensive.
Also, can you give me a list of all the hardware I need? I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Thanks!
mas3000 05-13-2002, 08:33 PM Can anyone post a list of ALL the hardware I need. Thanks. :)
i say always get a western digital , never had a problem any of there drives . As far as a list of what you need , thats really up to you , pricewatch doesnt have bad prices either if you're interested in buying piece by piece

It would, but then ... I try not to build home PC in rackmount case either :)
