Hi, I'm running a board that constantly gets shut off because we've exceeded our max query limit of 50000. We only have 300 members but looking to expand. Are there phpbb friendly hosts out there that do not put a query limit on thier hosting that we can transfer our board to? We're currently at ipowerweb.

im sure it will depend on how much you are willing to pay.
and how much load the servers already have on them

How much bandwidth and space are you looking for?

I don't know much about bandwidth/space. This will only be for the forum, nothing else. Here are our current stats, we started it in January but like I said, it will grow soon. I'm guessing we will wind up with about 1000 members.

Best advice would probably be to contact some of the hosts directly and ask them if it would be a problem.
I have seen a few sites that have policys against to much database use.

Hello JohnLegend,

You have stumbled on the consequence of low priced hosts with huge packages. You will ALWAYS get cut off for server resource utilization long before you have used the bandwith and diskspace you have purchased - this is especially true when you are hosting applications...

That is a very small forum and you should have no problem what-so-ever hosting it (as long as you keep phpbb up to date with patches, upgrades, etc..)

Any host that isnt overselling their servers will be a good fit for you. Expect to pay $0.75-$2.00/GB of transfer. If you purchase a plan in this price range, you have a much lower probability of running into these issues.

Hope this helps...

I'd like feedback from people about hosts they use though and who has good experiences, as I've found that many hosts just tell you what you want to hear.

CartikaHosting is right, if your host is overselling then they have to cut you off if you are using to many resources, or else the rest of there sites will be sluggish.

and your statement is corrrect most people just want a quick buck and dont care about performance

Im sure there are some users here that will post shortly about there experiences with other hosts

"I can't Pm people for some reason!" you have to have 5 post to be able to pm

I mean is it that bleak?

I don't understand why with only 300 odd users and no mods installed we're getting so many queries...we're on the latest version, etc.

Maybe ask on phpBB's support mboard. Something must be turned on which is isn't.

We host a phpbb board (http://topklik.freepowerboards.com) with ~27,500 posts and ~950 users and they get very few queries.

I agree with Kimmikat, maybe ask some of the folks at phpbb.

Simultaneous as in how many people are online at once? Or how many users have several alternate handles?

From my experience phpBB is a rather sloppy board (with it's resources).

My suggestion to you would be to remotely host the WowBB board. I think you get the board, and the hosting for $10.95/mo.

JohnLegend

It usually maxes out at like 17 online at once

Simultaneous as in how many people are online at once?Yes. That simultaneous! :)

It usually maxes out at like 17 online at onceThat's not such a big number. Andrew might be right; another host, preferably a more expensive one, would be able to give you more.

constantly gets shut off because we've exceeded our max query limit of 50000.Where is this limitation stated on their site? I can't seem to find it.

I'm not sure what our query numbers are (where do you find that), but we have 386 members, 77k posts and our database is 43mb. Our phpbb board has quite a few mods, but it seems to be running well.

I'd go with this guy, I've used freepowerboards.com before and thought it was a really nice service. I've told a few people about it on these forums, I guess you need it too :)
I suggest just using their live support link on their page and see what they can do for you.

Are you using pconnect to connect to MySQL or connect? (pconnect is persistent connections, which could be causing part of the problem as it ties up SQL "ports").

That would be my guess, you are bound to have persistent connections enabled, otherwise I can't fathom how you could get that many queries from that small a board.
