View Full Version : What comes with Win2k?

I'm looking into getting Win2k for my server. It is more expensive but seems to have more features. Does anyone know if it comes with a control panel? If so, is it any good?

Are there advantages to use Win2k over Linux? Is it easier? Which OS do you prefer?

There must be a reason why it is more expensive than Linux... Why is it?

some reasons: support, availability of high-end applications, GUI, advanced ACL, support for mircosoft technology(FP/office server extension, .Net, ASP, etc....)

win2k comes with a lot of business expensive, security holes, daily exploits created for it. All sorts of good stuff. It costs a lot becaise Bill Gates says so. Not justification.

Sure it comes with a control panel, it's called the GUI. :)

As for the more expensive question, that's the simple difference between commercial software marketed by a company looking to generate a profit for its shareholders, and an open source OS developed by a whole load of volunter coders.

GUI is there control panel? Is it good? Can I set up resellers with it?

ckpeter
05-12-2002, 01:18 PM
NO, I don't think you can setup up reseller on it. Remember, the GUI is just a typical windows interface through the terminal service. You can look up windows 2000 security reference to see if it supports creating a user that is not an administrator but has the right to create other users; that's the closest it seems of a "reseller", but I doubt such capacity exists.

Your best bet is to get a control panel with it if you want to do hosting.

I'd like to colocate the Win2k server. Is GUI an online control panel? Or is it only accessable via the computer?

ckpeter
05-12-2002, 01:45 PM
Please read my previous post: GUI is just the regular windows interface accessible through terminal service. You run the terminal service on the server, and use a windows client to connect and login to the server, much as you would to a local computer.

Are there anyone free online services that are web-based and will connect to the GUI and configure everything through a webpage?

ckpeter

What do you mean by free "online service"? What you are describing seems to be a control panel. There are commercial control panels such as www.hostingcontroller.com or www.ensim.com (windows panel in beta). The may be one or two other free scripts, but their capacity are very limited compared to commerical offers.

 It's $500/month???????? Eeek.

How good is Hosting Controller? Can you set up reseller accounts? Why is is so expensive?

ckpeter

Search the forum for more information to hosting controller. Remember, there is a lack of control panel for Windows server, that's why its so expensive.

To find out more about hosting controller; specifically whether it supports reseller, visit the feature page.

HSphere supports resellers, I suggest you take a look at www.psoft.net

H-sphere seems reasonably priced. But I'm a little confused at the pricing. Let me see if I have it right:

- $95 setup fee
- $55 extra server logical fee
- 20% of some fee?

So it's around $150 initial setup fees plus $4.50/month for each account AND 20% of a fee? Does that come with unlimited licenses?

ckpeter
05-12-2002, 03:22 PM
No, the pricing for h-sphere is $4.5 per account one time fee. You have to purchase a minium of 100 account pack ($450) plus $95 of installation. The 20% is for support/upgrade.

I know there are some h-sphere reseller who will sell for 50 account pack.

Peter

I don't need that many licenses. Who can sell in packs of 50?

ckpeter
05-12-2002, 03:43 PM
check out the h-sphere reseller/partner page and contact them directly for quotes. In particular, I remember webauthorities was offering pack of 50.

It's $500/month????????

It's $500 per server not monthly...

How good is Hosting Controller?

Hosting controller has a good interface, but is full of bugs. Support sucks from HC, patches rarely come out.

Can you set up reseller accounts?

Yes, you can...

Why is is so expensive?

Since when was there ever an inexpensive windows product? IMO I don't think it's worth the money...

Go with linux, virtually everything is free!

WebMin (http://www.webmin.com)

and

web://cp (http://webcp.can-host.com/)

Trust me you're WAY better off with linux, windows is extremly insecure, you'll regret it once you get hit by all the windows bugs that spread around.

has anyone heard of the "microsoft action pack subscription" . The only reason i bring it up is because it was mentioned ms was not cheap . Heres what i got for 400 bucks

Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Small Business Server 2000
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1
Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
Microsoft Exchange Server Enterprise Edition version 5.5
Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 Service Pack
Microsoft Project 2000
Microsoft Windows 2000 Customer Support and Diagnostics Tools
Microsoft Mobile Information Server 2002
Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional

The action pack and the web hoster program are probably the best little secrets for ms junkies.

And you only need spend 300 to get all the software in the action pack. ;)

Here is the issue with the MS AP:

Product Licenses may not be used for any purpose other than demonstration, testing, education, or evaluation of the Products.

I see, monopoly.

I've heard you can download Linux for free but it takes a while to download(like 400MB). Does anyone know where I can download it for free? Or get it on a CD for free + shipping & handling?

The price for H-Sphere is one time, per account. It can span multiple servers. So if you have 3 servers, with 100 accounts, 10 domains average under each account, the total price will be:
$95 installation fee
$450 one time fee
20%of the license fee for upgrades are waived for the first year.
So it comes total to: $545 one time fee.

Greetings:

"There must be a reason why it is more expensive than Linux... Why is it?"

It is called "licensing fees." ;-)

Linux - free.
Ipchains or iptables for firewalling - free
Log Sentry, snort, and other IDS - free
Apache - free
mySQL - free

The list goes on.

Thank you.

I think ENSIM for Win2k is good, but not yet release :

From Ensim.com Staff :
Pricing for Win2k WEBppliance is not set yet, but "not to exceed"- $700 for 100 domain license with MailMax. $900 for the unlimited license with MailMax. If you want Win2k WEBppliance without MailMax the 100 domain license $179 and the unlimited license $349.
