View Full Version : DreamHost vs. GoDaddy
cashmeer 03-11-2006, 03:29 AM Im contemplating on which site to choose from between these two. I'm VERY new to this whole webhosting.
I'm currently thinking about creating a personal website of me. And I need all the following:
-wordpress (b2) blog
-picture album
-good access (99.99% up time)
Honestly, I've looked everywhere and these are the only two things that caught my attention. Especially DreamHost, I saw what they had to offer and wow.. the promo code is not that bad neither ($9.24 for the whole year). But i dont know if I should worry or not. I've looked everywhere to see if either one of these two are good. But none of them gave me the answer.
Pls Help me out. List all the good and bad things about these sites, Especially DreamHost.
PS: What are somethings that I need to look for in a web host?
TIA!
W4 Hosting 03-11-2006, 03:49 AM There lot story about godaddy and dreamhost.
try to use search Button on top,. you will find tons of review about them.
cashmeer 03-11-2006, 04:07 AM Im also curious about that 777 promo code. Is that only good for one year? Can I use the same code after one year?
Disgruntled 03-11-2006, 04:16 AM I have no experience with Dreamhost. For a simple site Godaddy has worked well for me so far. While I don't scientifically monitor my site, I have always found it to be up and running when I spot check it or make changes.
TechnoBound 03-11-2006, 04:33 AM I wish there was a "neither" option, so I could select it, along with most of the people on this forum.
Go for a better host, or you'll regret it later on...
ldcdc 03-11-2006, 04:40 AM Im also curious about that 777 promo code. Is that only good for one year? Can I use the same code after one year?I'm pretty certain you can't, but, as usual in such cases, it's best to just ask the host directly. Consider it a responsiveness test if you will. :)
cashmeer 03-11-2006, 05:15 AM What about site5? I've heard alot of good things about them?
Nadabrahma 03-11-2006, 05:28 AM Regarding all those, you can simply search for opinions here since they are all frequently discussed here.
All I can say, based on the opinions I've seen over time, is that GoDaddy would NOT be my first choice for hosting..... :D
cashmeer 03-11-2006, 05:42 AM What about StartLogic.Com good or bad?
kapina 03-11-2006, 06:56 AM Im also curious about that 777 promo code. Is that only good for one year? Can I use the same code after one year?
No, it's for the first year only. Maximum discount is $97, and it's easy to find promo codes for that exact amount. Please do note that they're trying their best to get you in and stay after the first year. DH is not using cPanel, so you probably have to move the accounts by hand.
What are you looking for? Bandwidth, disk space, specific tools, fast support... or as inexpensive host as possible? What is your budget? Do you run a business site, or just a family album or something similar?
Hey - stop playing with font colors and sizes! My eyes are melting! :eek4::D
cedced 03-11-2006, 07:13 AM is dreamhost support better ?
k30248 03-11-2006, 07:16 AM When i googled info on the code, it says that it's expired. Does it still work? It might be worth signing up just for an year for storage and bandwidth and if it's terrible, $10 isn't too much to lose.
Antony 03-11-2006, 07:57 AM No experience about godaddy.
I bought dreamhost and feel it works fine.
cashmeer 03-11-2006, 06:57 PM ]I emailed them and asked them about the promo code. You are right. it only works for 1 year. After that I have to get another promo code.
Its going to be a personal site of me. I want everything thats going to allow me to enhance my site.
Picture album
wordpress or b2 capable
I don't have much experience with building a site. Actually its my first time. So i'm still learning as I go by
markjut 03-11-2006, 07:15 PM Both large companies although godaddy has had a few complaints recently

-wordpress or b2 capableYou should be aware that with such applications, you're not going to come anywhere close to using the 1000GB without tripping the CPU abuse level.
kapina 03-12-2006, 05:08 AM is dreamhost support better ?
They seem to know what they're doing, but depending on the support load, it may take hours for them to reply. No, haven't really tried to post "OMG Critical" category support tickets so don't know if they go past the queue.
DH may not be a suitable host if you need some virtual hand-holding. They say in their TOS that you need some skills. :)
Storagedump.com 03-12-2006, 05:15 AM i was googling promo codes to see if i could save any money on godaddy, i stumbled across "saveten" .. i saved 10% on my domain. this was ordered yesterday.
drakazz 03-12-2006, 06:20 AM So DreamHost are not scam or what?
seems like really cheap prices [plus setup fee $50]...
20GB Disk , 1TB B/w - $7.95 / month + $50 setup!? seems like a heck of cheap thing... Maybe that would cover the costs of a bigger disk but no way - for the bandwidth...
Please tell me, thanks
Jay August 03-12-2006, 06:31 AM cashmeer your colorful posts are annoying.
kapina 03-12-2006, 06:40 AM So DreamHost are not scam or what?
They've been in business for eight years or something like that. Of course, not that whole time as a overselling behemoth... :)
Their plan is to get you in, and make you stay. And to do that, the hosting has to be ok. They probably profit only after the first year. But then again, unless you're an experienced webmaster who has heavy-traffic sites, you probably use so little that they may almost break even anyways. They're playing with averages and big numbers.
On the disk space: DH uses file servers - the "frontend" hosting machines don't seem to host the user /home directories. Again, they're counting the average usage to be way below what they offer.
Setup fee is waived for the yearly paid accounts, which makes the first year something like $20+.
KGIII 03-12-2006, 07:03 AM See for instance:

For some of the die-hards:

Chances are, mathematically, that they'll profit even from the sale of even the small/cheap packages and, if their terms of services are to be understood correctly, they will cancel your account should you put them in a situation where they will not profit such as "excess server usage" or the likes.
As you're new, find a small hosting company that is often really just a decent reseller and get a good monthly package to avoid getting burned. Get your domain from someone other than that company. The smaller hosting company is far more likely (in my experiences) to provide you with the help that you might need.

You're right.
They're their own registrar, but the domain will cost them $6+. You can't push very much data or answer many tickets for the rest of the price. But in the end, it brought them some money. Maybe it's just $1/mo, but some companies are selling accounts for that.
Get your domain from someone other than that company.
This is a good advice to all the novices out there. It's better to register the domain from a "real" registrar, such as namecheap or godaddy. You can always move the sites (since you had those backups, right?!), but if you lose the domain, it's hard to get it back.
Of course, it depends on how much you trust your host...

I think this is true, as long as the employees are interrested in serving you. I've seen one small webhost turn from brilliant to terrible. I guess the guy behind the company just got fed up. Bigger companies tend to be more consistent - their operations can't depend on any one staff member.
honekai 03-16-2006, 09:08 PM If you go with GoDaddy just make sure you don't go over bandwidth. I use them to host my images, and it just so happens several of my articles got on to the front page of slashdot.org which brought in nearly a million unique visitors last month. Lets just say I went over my limit by about 100GB, they charge you $5.95 for every 100GB you go over so I had to pay around $571. You don't get a warning nor a bandwidth exceeded page either they just keep on letting it run.
I personally LOVE Go Daddy. I've been with them since late 2004 and have never even thought about switching hosts. I highly recommend them.
littleoslo 03-16-2006, 10:34 PM some ppl keep telling me to use dreamhost while the godaddy seems really ok, i cant really choose because those sites are running smooth to me.
ntfu2 03-16-2006, 10:43 PM I couldnt even figure out how to use that joke of a control panel that godaddy has...

Posting promo codes on the forums is against wht rules

There's a throttle setting on the bandwidth page. If you don't want to deal with huge overages, just tell the cp to throttle your site at a certain amount of transfer.
As for dreamhost vs godaddy...
Godaddy is not a hosting company. It is a domain company, and when they do hosting, you realize this. That's all I have to say about them.
Dreamhost is a very user-friendly company...Assuming the user knows what he's doing.
If you're an advanced user, you'll love their control panel, features and slow but funny and efficient staff. If you're not...well...go with a host that offers cpanel.
If you just need a personal site, you should be find with almost any shared host. If you think you can handle dh's control panel and reasonably slow support, then I'd take the $10/year deal and run with it.
