View Full Version : What is going on with the Rackshack ping times / Verio network?

Hi all!

For the last couple of days I've been experiencing big time problems with connecting to my server at RackShack. Ping is up to almost 280 ms with my DSL line and packet loss at 50-75%. This is really not normal. I've been opening a trouble ticket, and they expected this to be sortened out soon. That was 42 hours ago.

Support over at RS didn't tell me exactly what was going on, so I opened another support ticket asking about this and an estimate on how long this is going to last. This ticket got closed with a comment added from their support that told me to not post multiple posts about the same question.

I've discovered that using another ISP I can connect to my server, but ping is even higher, 310 ms. No packet loss though.

When using DSL this causes POP and FTP to time out while connecting. I can not log into admin panels either.

I've been seing same problem with the threads over at RackShack forums.

I am in Norway. I know that from the US everything seems OK, but here it's horrible! The traceroute shows that from my computer to Teleglobe Frankfurt there is a delay on 55 ms, and from Frankfurt to Teleglobe New York there is another delay taking ping up to 135 ms. I guess this is quite normal, but after this point this is where (I think) problems start!

From my traceroute report it seems that Verio is experiencing packet loss at one of their nodes in Texas, and packets are also losed when being routed over to Rackshacks network.

Anyone know what's going on??

Oh, BTW: WHT is also very slow today, but I don't know if that's caused by the same problem or not. I have not had any problems with other international sites.

Thanks!

One of our servers on tayhou-223-37.ev1.net has around 160. Double the rest. When I looked at the network page, we were located on a 1.25MByte port with 25 other people :/

from around NYC, i'm at about an 80ms ping over 30 minutes while browsing the boards.

I am not really concerned about the high ping times. It's more important that I can actually REACH the server. With a packet loss of 25-100% (more 100% than 25%), it was very often impossible to check emails, open a FTP session etc.

I sent an email to Verio after doing a traceroute which clearly showed that there was a problem somewhere within their network. I actually got a response from them a couple of days later, when there was no problems anymore, stating that they never had had problems with their lines and that my experiences were quite normal for connections from Norway.

Well, I have been surfing to quite a bit of RackShack sites from here, and I know this wasn't normal. So did my users!

Anyway, my RackShack trouble ticket is still open and yet to be answered.

Sorry guys if I may seem rude here, but what in the world do you expect at $99 per month? Do you honestly think that there network would not be horribly oversubscribed? And there technical support would be of worth anything?

Just remember you get what you pay for!

RackShack isn't "horribly oversubscribed", as you can check there network graphs and see that their bandwidth ultilization is no where near the headroom availablie on their pipe.

Yeah horribly is a strong word ;-). I agree it's not that bad, but it's getting real close. Especially the Cogent 1000MB link, also all depends on how they setup the network. If Cogent is supplying them a fiber link and they are converting to CAT5, then they are loosing some bandiwdth in the translation.

Yeah... Cogent...

_To_ my server at RackShack the final end of the pipe is via Verio, but coming _from_ my server _to_ me, it's a return via a good chunk of _Cogent_ pipe (and there-in lies the apparent cause of the slow pings)...

Are you sure you don't mean the opposite of what you said? If you look at their graphs you will see most of the bandwidth is not shown. As for the cogent link, they only show 680mbits not the full 1gigabit.

http://rackshack.net/aboutus/networks.asp

From there network graphs they have about 1.5GigaBITS of extra bandwidth.
