not sure if you were looking for a long-term free service ... but their 30-day demo is free...

We high recommend QWKMON as it has worked great to monitor our servers. You can also use an Ping program to ping the serverse.

I recommend netmonitor365 (despite the similar name, they are not related to us at all).

The main reason why I prefer them over competitors is that when your site goes down, they include a traceroute with the alert they send you. This means that you'll instantly see whether your site itself is down, or wheter there is simply a problem somewhere between netmonitor365 and your server.
