View Full Version : Will this server configuration work?
mas3000 05-10-2002, 07:50 PM I think I have most of the parts to build a complete 1U server. Here is what I came up with, please tell me what I'm missing or if my parts won't work together!
-----------------------------------------------------
1U Rackmount Case - http://www.mpcparts.com/prodspecs/050154.asp
Motherboard, 1Ghz Duron Processor, AMD Approved fan - http://pcinfinity.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=BASK&Store_Code=PCInfinity&Action=ADPR&Product_Code=MBPCKITAMD&Attributes=Yes&Quantity=1
256MB Ram - http://pcinfinity.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PCInfinity&Product_Code=MEM256PC133&Product_Count=0&Category_Code=MEM
40GB Hard Drive - http://pcinfinity.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PCInfinity&Product_Code=HDMXT40GB&Product_Count=0&Category_Code=HDMXT
CD-ROM - http://pcinfinity.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PCInfinity&Product_Code=CDROM52X&Product_Count=0&Category_Code=CDROM
Floppy Drive - http://pcinfinity.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PCInfinity&Product_Code=FD1.44&Product_Count=0&Category_Code=FD
Comes out to be about $387.

Any comments on my configuration? Will my configuration NOT work?
Thanks,
Mike
dektong 05-10-2002, 08:13 PM Several things:
1. That rackmount case does not seem to come with any power supply, does it? I can't find any description about PS from the link you gave above.
2. I bet this approved AMD cooling fan won't even fit in your 1U rackmount (I have told you about this yesterday, have you checked the fan?)
3. I am not sure about the memory, it looks low profile all right, but I have bought memory in the past where the pictures shown was a low profile memory but was not the case when I receive it. Usually a low profile memory (like the one shownin the picture) will mention the words "low profile"
4. My other suggestion: spend extra few bucks for 7200 rpm HD, it's well worth it ...
Good luck.
cheers,
Sainthax 05-10-2002, 08:44 PM I just took a pic of a standard AMD approved fan and a 1u sized case

mas3000 05-10-2002, 08:52 PM OK dektong,
1.) Would this -> http://www.mpcparts.com/prodspecs/300023.asp <- power supply work?
2.) I couldn't find that same fan on the website, but I think it's dimensions are 77.5 X 60.5 X 65. Would that work in the case?
3.) I haven't had a chance to ask PC Infinity about the memory. If I have to, I'll just go to Best Buy or Circuit City to buy memory so that I can see it in person.
4.) I think I'll probably make the hard drive 7200.
Thanks,
Mike
Sainthax 05-10-2002, 08:56 PM heres the memory sizes
http://www.ngdsinc.com/~jason/memory.jpg
I'd go with 512mb myself
the fan won't fit
Case Dimensions: 44.5mm(H) x 422mm(W) x 596mm(D)
Fan Dimensions: 77.5mm(H) x 60.5mm(W) x 65mm(D)
mas3000 05-10-2002, 08:57 PM Do I HAVE to have a fan? Will it make a big difference?
Sainthax 05-10-2002, 08:59 PM the server will crash in 5 mins without a fan, and it will probably fry the chip too
mas3000 05-10-2002, 09:02 PM What fan should I use then? Can you suggest a site with a good motherboard/cpu combo that comes with a fan that fits? Or can you suggest a seperate fan that will work and fits?
Sainthax 05-10-2002, 09:11 PM you seem new to all this so heres a link to help you out
http://www.pchardware.ro/Reviews/review.php?id=162
and heres the site where you can find most parts you'll need
http://www.rackmountparts.com/production/New%20Accessory%20Website/IndexPageMotify.htm
heres the direct link to the cpu fans
http://www.rackmountparts.com/production/New%20Accessory%20Website/CPU_Related.htm
take a look at the fan marked P/N: EVP3CPUFU600 you might be able to get away with using that fan
Elan Vital P3 flip chip CPU fan support up to 600MHz. D: 2"L x 2"W x 1"H able fit for 1U chassis.
you can't get a fan larger than 1.25" high or it will not fit
mas3000 05-10-2002, 09:13 PM Thanks Sainthax, I've been looking for a site like that for the past week.:)
AcuNett 05-10-2002, 09:33 PM You sure you need a cd rom and floppy?
mas3000 05-10-2002, 09:35 PM AcuNett, I'm not too sure about floppy, but I'll need the CD-ROM to install the operating system.
Sainthax, check your PM.
dbzgod 05-10-2002, 09:47 PM I would get a floppy drive with it. Just in case you need an emergency boot disk or something. It can not hurt can it?
web_res 05-10-2002, 11:04 PM If he has a cd-rom, then in most cases he wouldn't need a floppy drive for boot disks.
TrouT 05-12-2002, 12:12 PM All the servers that I run are atleast in a small tower case. It pays to go taller and pay more when colo time comes. It all runs cooler.
mas3000 05-12-2002, 01:12 PM I've looked for a small tower case but can't find one. How many U's does a small tower case count for when colocating?
mas3000 05-14-2002, 07:20 PM Suggestions?
