zRedDice 05-10-2002, 12:37 PM How unlimited is the bandwidth?
- James
James[UH] 05-10-2002, 12:40 PM Thats a good question. Lots of people always ask that.
One of my sites (unique-hardware.co.uk), did 36gb in 5 hours when the new counter strike mod and half life patches were out. I would say that is too much. But around 30gb a DAY would be the max for an account.

So it's not unlimited bandwidth

OK, its not unlimited, but you find a web host that allows 30gb a day for £6 a month or £66 a year and get a month free?
In a way, its more unmetered than unlimited. If an account is found to be using resources, such as bandwidth, or high processor usage you will be notified and told what to do to bring down you usage.

OK, its not unlimited . . . . . . Then why advertise it as such?
Why not just say, "Up to 30 GB" (or whatever you're comfortable with)?
Why should someone go with you if you can't provide what they think they're buying?

I second that .... :)
James[UH] 05-10-2002, 01:18 PM There are plenty of hosting companies that advertise as this. I can name two now:
http://www.squareinternet.co.uk
http://www.liquidonline.co.uk
No complaints from either of them.

No, it doesnt.
But im not being a criminal. Im advertising and selling something that I cant see anyone else offering. If it makes people happy we could change it to: "unmetered bandwidth"

I can see that you chose to follow any maketing system you believe will produce you results. No matter how dishonest it may be. After all . . . . *Others* do it.
You ain't gonna convince nobody around here that what you're doing is right. Because it's not.
You said yourself, "Unlimited Bandwidth." Then, "Well not unlimited, just sorta up to a limit." Then, "Well it's okay cuz somebody else does it."
sheeesh
Hostlinux 05-10-2002, 01:32 PM A fasthost reseller folks....opps, I said the F Word :stickout
James[UH] 05-10-2002, 01:35 PM Jesus guys came here to try and sell my hosting not get slated.

It isn't unmetered .... you said there's a bandwidth limit, so unmetered bandwidth is impossible, how could you check it if somebody has more than 30GB traffic daily if it's unmetered ??
And if other hosts are misleading their customers, is this a valid reason for you to offer that aswell ?

You're saying you offer unlimited bandwidth, and you don't. It's your own fault.
James[UH] 05-10-2002, 01:44 PM If you guys dont agree, you dont have to order you know.
James[UH] 05-10-2002, 01:52 PM The type of customers we are aiming for, are small to medium sized sites.
OK, I admit the unlimited bandwidth is completly true, but for that price, and to be able to do 30gb a day, its appealing.
raine 05-10-2002, 01:53 PM Despite all this bashing, I do need some high bandwidth / low hdd so this may fit my bill ... I have some flash and some original mp3s I want to put on this server, so is that a problem? There's nothing illegal about any of this - so with your confirmation I may hop on over and do a test drive...
I noticed that you said payment through CHEQUES? I'm from Canada - Can I send you Canadian cheques? Paypal?
SuperDon 05-10-2002, 01:55 PM ...the moment Fasthosts see you with a 30gb a day account they will close your account.....i can 99% guarantee that.
Even though Fasthosts offer unlimited bandwidth I think you are still best putting a realistic cap on the bandwidth your users can have, otherwise you could end up with a few unhappy clients.

OK, im not entirly sure if we can accept Candnadian cheques. Thats for the yearly payments. But we can accept a bank transfer/one off standing order into the business account.
There may be a fee at your end though to do so.
SuperDon, as I said earlier, I have a site (unique-hardware.co.uk, who did 36gb in 5 hours. Fasthosts did get in contact with me and told me that was too much to be shifting for 5 hours. They told me if you move 30gb in a day that is acceptable.
SuperDon 05-10-2002, 02:15 PM ok, just trying to offer advice...
while you mention it, unique-hardware.co.uk isnt hosted at Fasthosts its at Starhosts.net......?
anyway.....

Nope, unique-hardware.co.uk is at fasthosts. uh-network is at starhosts (or squareinternet.co.uk)
Choose them because we dont do PHP support, and I wanted PHP forums ;)

Earlier, you said that someone 'else' could use 30GB a day.
How could you let one customer use 30GB a day; when that's what Fasthosts said they would let 'you' use?
SuperDon 05-10-2002, 02:30 PM ...apologies....i was mistaken.:scatter:
still say if you offer unlimited bandwidth you will get burnt!

I should of said per account on my reseller account. So per site.
p1net 05-10-2002, 03:14 PM Are you sure FAsthosts did'nt mean 30GB a day for all your sites???

Nope, they said per site on the account.
mdrussell 05-10-2002, 03:55 PM James, people aren't trying to bash you, merely help you.
30Gb may be a high amount, but it's not unlimited.
I highly doubt that if you did 30Gb per day for each day of the month accross all of your account, let alone per site, FH would keep your account open.
I know I couldn't offer anyone 900 Gigs of traffic per month with a fee of only £50 per month. I highly doubt any of our servers could push 900 gigs per month with the scripting that some sites we host use.
Matt
AcuNett 05-10-2002, 07:14 PM How much would it be for 3GB Space instead of 400MB? I will need that for daily backups for our servers, also how much if I go over the 900GB limit?
Then why advertise it as such?
Then why not show some style and pm the guy - or are you just searching for someone to argue with?
James, you're probably a reliable guy but the advise to not offer unlimited bandwidth is a wise advise. - posting an unlimited offer here on WHT invites those persons who ........ I think I'll keep it for myself. Good luck with your hosting company :)

You know it brings a tear to my eye to know that once I work for years and my site gets too popular you will tell me what I need to do to turn my potential customers away. I was worried there for a moment. Good thing you stepped in James, I was about to make too much money. We can't have that now can we.

And you have defined this as your mission in life? Booo :disagree: tells me more about you than the companies and people your kinds usually finds something to criticise about. People can search for advice on different hosting companies in other parts of this forum. This is a forum where hosting offerings are posted. No need to do it the way you do. How old are you? - no more responses from me. Goodbye and now back to the good old spirit :agree: .
