I've been on Pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com) and searched for few bare 1U Racks.

Too many and don't know which to get. I currently use a Cobalt RAQ 4 and it's not enough. I started using it as a "relay" for broadcasting music.

I need something like Pentium 4 2.2 GIG or similar power, 1.5 GIG of ram... and lots of storage.

I would love to get an OEM 1U and fill it with "regular" desktop items and not be bound to "special" ram for RAQs only or small laptop type of hard-drive and such. I work with a guy (he does not sell raqs) but I can get RAM Dirt cheap and 120GIG drives for dirt cheap.

I saw one at: WiredZone - 6011D 1U SuperServer (http://www.wiredzone.com/itemdesc.asp?CartId=&ic=10015215) but it's just a SuperMicro server rack and wondered what I should look into.

I will be co-locating this server on a OC3 Line with major speeds. Right now I am on T1 or T3 line with lots of others and the music streams choke very easily.

If it's a barebones, why is it over 500$. . If it's the CASE only should be allot less.

I've got f'ed over on my hosting and I am going solo to host it elsewhere. I don't want to get jacked again. I need something I can load RED HAT 7.2 with IceCast or Shoutcast and I might also consider getting PLESK for web hosting if I have space or bandwidth. I am trying to dump my tiny... Cobalt RAQ 4.

I also searched on PowerEdge servers, Compaq, Dell and such but I don't want to buy the name. I want to buy the power.
I also want to use it as a backup. If I am not happy with Linux R.H. I can easily install Windows 2K Server.

Take a look here (http://www.8anet.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=117&lastcatid=186&step=4). You can get the 1U case (already including the slim CDROM and FD combo) as well as P4SBE m/b (around $200) for that one "low" price. Actually, most supermicro cases will include supermicro m/b so you are not paying only for the case ...

cheers,

I am also concerned about an earlier post I read about buying cheap chasis and ending up loosing because of poor design, heating and such. I don't mind paying for a good case, a good motherboard and the CPU and RAM I can buy for dirtcheap through a friend with re-sale license.

I've bookedmarked them and I will follow up and do some research.

Thanks for the info.

I think $563 is quite a good price ...

The m/b itself is around $200, the case is around $200 (Search for SC811 on pricewatch) but if you want the Slim CDROM/FD, that's additional $100. So combined, it's around $500. Well, you can get them at $563, which is still a fair price, don't you think?

But of course if you want to build yourself, you can buy P4 m/b with SiS 845 chipset for around $80. Then, the 1U rackmount and FD/CDROM is around $250, so you get the barebone for around $330 (plus S/H) ... Well of course, the $200 more you pay for the supermicro does have a reason ....

I guess it's a good deal. I am consern about the limitation. The RAM is soo cheap right now and the HD are so cheap... I want to pack it up real good. I can probably get a Maxtor 60gig 7200rpm IDE Hard Drive hard drive for less than 80$. Ram is dirt cheap.

So this does not come with chip:
P4SBE - Single Intel 478-pin Pentium 4 microPGA processors
at 2.2+ GHz - 1.4 GHz, 400 MHz FSB

It's hard to tell which is good. If I buy the parts and put it all together. I can go hunt pricewatch.com and buy one by one or just buy the above case and add the 2.2 GIG Pentium 4 Chip (is the same as the desktop servers right nothing fancy) and about 2 GIGs of RAM because it's dirt cheap. I don't know if there's plenty of space. 4 sticks of 512mb.
