For those of you that are CHEAP! ... I'm sorry, I mean "cost-effective" ;) www.1and1.com appears to be again offering free .info names for NEW registrations.
Please note that 1and1 is not my favorite registrar, but the question is often posed in this section of the forum, "Where can I get a free domain name?"
So there's a new answer for a limited time. :peace:
Before rushing on over, you might want to do a search and see what your getting yourself into with a control panel that just sucks in my opinion and some other folks indicated difficulty transferring out (which I did NOT have a problem with about six months ago).
Anyway, you can't get much cheaper than free... but then you usually get what you pay for. :D

Just pick the Instant Domain plan; I didn't have to pay anything for mine. I don't know if this works if you don't have a credit card in their system, though. You get 5 subdomains and some not bad email services, considering it's free. Seems like a limit of 5 domains per customer~
OT, honestly, I don't mind 1and1's control panel that much... what's so bad about it?
*/me is starting to sound like a 1and1 corporate shill *

That's are far as I got also. I don't trust them. Why do they need a credit card number and a reversible charge if it's "free"?
1&1 will make a $6.00 authorization-only charge, which is then immediately reversed, to ensure the functionality of the credit card in our billing system.

1&1 will make a $6.00 authorization-only charge, which is then immediately reversed, to ensure the functionality of the credit card in our billing system. This came up in the great .info give away of 1994.
Back then, DomainSite started out NOT requiring any credit card. They immediately found out that spammers and minors were creating huge numbers of separate accounts. It wasn't too long before they started requiring a credit card as a way to verify people's identity. I'm sure that 1and1's requirement is to prevent spammers from wasting their resources.
Of course, the other reason is that they are hoping that you will renew your domain name next year. ;) I've never kept a domain there for over six months... so I don't know if they autorenew or not.
OT, honestly, I don't mind 1and1's control panel that much... what's so bad about it?It used to be much, much slower than it apparently is now... but it just is not intuitive to me. For example, eNom makes it very clear whether your domains are going to be auto-renewed or not. With 1and1, I don't have a clue where to find that info - or if it's even listed.

How accurate is their system? and why $6. I though a charge of .01 would work
