If you only get a few hits from each multiplied by hundreds of free links it starts to pay off. I asked a few topic-related sites if they would kindly add me to their (existing) lists of links, and was polite when I was sometimes turned down. I submitted myself to DMOZ (only once, and to a narrow on-topic category). Then I waited. Patience, I think, is crucial, if you're wanting to build something lasting.
