Hi,

The "hold on" period, that is called also redemption period, lasts for up to 30 days after a domain name has been deleted as expired and being unrenewed. However, during this "hold on" period the expired domain's owner is allowed to still renew or more correctly to say to get it back, paying an additional fee.
Besides, there's also extra 5 days period after that redemption period during which the domain name is not available yet.
Thus, after the "hold - on" period and days extra time end, you can get the domain name if it's not retieved by its previous owner.

isnt the regsistrar DOMAIN NAMES CHEAP? if not then how do i find out?

also, what actual date can it be bought by someone given the specifics i posted?

26 Jan 2006 + 30 days ? + 5 days ? = march 2nd ? or can it be gotten soon somehow?

can i use any registrar to get it?

maybe the current 'owner' lost the chance to get it at a cheap rewewal do they are waiting for it to expire and pay less? is that how it works?

According to http://www.whois-search.com/deleting/who.php , PlanetDomain is working with SnapNames... So I would probably focus my attention there first and at least download their Priority Partner list. I would also put in a backorder there and that will at least get you in on the auction, if there is one.

But at https://www.snapnames.com/preferred_info.jsp , I do NOT see PlanetDomain listed as a Preferred Partner. To me this means that the domain name will be sent back to the registry and released to the general public along with all the other dropped names on the drop date.

As to what date, you might run the name through the FreeWho Status checker at: http://www.freewho.com/checker/ (have patience as FreeWho been running a little slow lately). But the status checker is usually pretty accurate with its estimates as to when the name will drop.

So the bottom line, like any dropping domain name, is that if you really want it, then you should put in backorders at the major backorder services like SnapNames, Pool, ClubDrop, and NameWinner.

Good Luck! ;)

the domain name i want to get is now showing:

REDEMPTIONPERIOD

it just started today. is it usually 5 more days before i can get it as if it was a unregistered domain name without trying the backorder stuff?

thanks

Waverunner, any desireable name will be bought at auction. If you want that domain, nows the time to bid at SnapNames (and possibly all the other dropcatchers/auctions). If you don't have the money to pay the auction minimum, then your only choice is to wait to see if it really drops. You never know, it might just be your lucky day :)

You'd need to ask PlanetDomain how long is their Pending Delete Period. Keep checking. You might find if it doesn't sell, then a registrar might pick it up, to "taste" if there is any traffic. If they don't like it, they'll drop it within 5 more days. So, if after the auction you see the registrant is a registrar (of some kind) rather than a real person. Keep trying the whois for another 5-7 more days.

I dont know why it hasnt been released. Can you guys help me? I missed several domains by such a confusing drop time. Some registrars can re-register them before the drop time! Oops. :)

Thank you alot!

You're welcome DC :)

You could read the Backordering thread in Domain Name Tutorials thread. Do a whois to determine who the registrar is, which'll determine where it'd being auctioned and check on their auctions to see where it currently stands. Heck you might even be tempted to place a bid :)

i still cant grasp when this dang thing might be available.

its not a hot domain, no one wants it besides me. thats the facts.

is it 70 days after it first expires? everything i read is different.

also, i read at some registrar that thte 5 days is random to give fairness to the people that want it. WTF? who writes and things this crap up.

set a time frame and release it. they have complicated that crap so much that it causes severe confusion. for what?

i think its a case of 'head of their arse' and no one to beat them bloody imo

All the registrars handle expiring domains differently. That's why there is no "one size fits all" answer to you question. Besides, why do you need to know to the day? If it's going to drop it won't be registered any time soon (according to you). So you can chill out :)
