View Full Version : Need Advice on Choice of Reseller
SyPliX 02-20-2006, 09:45 PM I am currently looking for a Reseller Host.
I have been doing web design for a few years and now am seeing the potential to provide hosting for my clients, hence web hosting won't be my main focus as web design and support are.
I would prefer the host to have CPanel as I am quite familiar with it and WHM.
Basically, I am looking more for Reliability than Profitability at the moment. I'd rather pay more to have a truely stable & reliable host with top notch support (24/7 phone+online), (which in return keeps my web design clients happy); than to go with a host that's cheap.
I have reviewed some hosts on WHT and other sites, but I'm still unsure.
hostgator.com
resellerzoom.com
site5.com
elitehosts.com
reyox.net
networkredux.com
any others?
What host should I settle with?
Any recommendations/suggestions would be appreciated.
David.
Hmmm...site5's been having a rough time lately.
I've heard of good things concerning Network Redux and HostGator. Pretty reasonable prices as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either of those two.
Best of luck :)
basic 02-20-2006, 10:11 PM Well, if you do web design you would do good to also look at the add-ons cPanel hosts offer. Other than for reliability and support the differences are here as well.

oclick 02-20-2006, 10:14 PM Problem with Cpanel is that they get hacked often. Have you looked into Plesk or DirectAdmin as an alternative ..... these also come with tons of addon scripts and your customers will love the ease of use the web interfaces (control panels) provide.
Do you have any statistics to back that up oclick?
oclick 02-20-2006, 10:44 PM No stats, but tons of long-term experience with both control panels.

Haha, no he doesn't because it's not true ;)
Out of all the cPanel servers I administrate and have worked on, I've never seen a box hacked through a security hole in cPanel itself.
oclick 02-20-2006, 10:49 PM "true" is a too big word that's misplaced here! I have no stats, where should I get those ... I have the stats in my head from 6 years of experience with both Cpanel and Plesk.
>> I've never seen a box hacked through a security hole in cPanel itself.
Okay, and not okay ... even a plain Cpanel install comes with phpBB and other scripts included. Sure get they hacked. Of course, how many hosts ONLY offer plain Cpanel without Fantastico and/or RVskin and/or Installatron?? These add to the problems -- it's much harder securing a Cpanel box than a Plesk box.
SyPliX 02-21-2006, 12:02 AM Thank you all for your responses.
Back to the topic, what host should I settle with based on my necessities above?
As of now I shouldn't need more than 5GB space and 50-70gb B/W.

I may consider other panels such as DirectAdmin or Plesk, any reseller hosts you would suggest?
Thanks,
David.

cPanel get's hacked often? That has to be the most ill informing statement of the day.
Servers can get hacked for a variety of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with cPanel but with the way they (servers) are configured.

If you are looking for reliability, that will keep your customers happy, you have named some pretty good hosts above. I would also add to your list QuickHost. Reason being is they offer technical support for your customers....yet you get the credit. From what I have seen on them, they are a very good host with great reviews. Also you have listed site5, resellerzoom, hostgator...all very good. Add QuickHost to your list of companies.
As far as a panel. If you are unfamilar with hosting in general, I would choose either cPanel or Direct admin. Both are very user-friendly. Ofcourse cPanel is the industry standard, but there are hosts that provide Direct Admin. Those two would be a good recommendation!
FlaNative 02-21-2006, 11:04 AM I recommend either of these for a reseller account instead of Site5:
Webkore.net - excellent uptime, fast end-user support, low server load (Savvis/Fort Worth, TX)
Sonet7.com - reseller account is limited to 50 domains so server is not overloaded (division of Liquid Web)
Experience speaking: had account with Site5 for 13 months and now have an account at Webkore and Sonet7.
SyPliX 02-21-2006, 03:38 PM What about all the big companies, like 1and1.com, godaddy.com, olm.com, cihost.com etc.?
What would be the benefits or downsides to going with them as oppose to the other hosts listed above?
Thanks,
David.

You seem to have forgotten about the forgot password vulnerability that was discovered back in 2005?

if you make a search, you will see the big companies in your list are not recommended. They seem not good enough in customer supporting service, meanwhile you are looking for a top notch support :) You can check out the following companies
- cyberwurx.com
- idologic.com
both of them are using the same datacenter (owned by Cyber Wurx). The network is great. I havent used Idologic service, you can make a search on board and see comments. The team in Cyber Wurx is very helpful, and it's a REAL 24/7 support. We are colocating our servers there, so I know how they do :)
- httpme.com: good reviews as well
- dotable.com: owned by former owner of httpme, and it seems they are doing another good job
SyPliX 02-21-2006, 10:05 PM Thanks for the advice gate2vn, I'll definitely look into your suggestions.
