Ask your parents to fork over the cash.

I'd budget for at least $2000 (CDN) to get everything off the ground. I'm not sying you have to have all that cash on hand but expect to spend that in three months.

Telephone System
Hosting Fee
Hosting Software rentals
Business Cards
Advertising
Web Design
SSL certificate
Merchant account if you wanna accept cc'ds

If you build your own web site that can save a lot. I'm still working on mine http://www.iroxy.ca Most of tehe upfront cost will be the set up fees which expect to have about $400-500 for.

There are quite a number of reseller or affliates programs that allows you to start up a hosting business for free. You may want to take a look at the offers forums, contact the hosts directly for such an account.

I never have liked the lack of customizability at resellers panel....
Evolver I think you summed up that list very well, I think you might be not have to pay quite that much depending on how you budget though.

I would like to take Evolvers reply into me detail:

Telephone System: Depending on where you get this, you will spend anywhere from $2 (www.kall8.com) up. Personally I use RingCentral. I pay $14.95 per month for a much better feature rich service than Kall8 (www.ringcentral.com)

Hosting Fee: Depends on where you go. Since your a start up, I would go with a host that offers a Free Billing System (like Clientexce)

Advertising: Most of this can be done for free. Go to some forums, submit to search engines and submit yourself to some hosting directories. It all depends on your target audience. You can spend anywhere from $1 and up

Web Design: Big advantage if you can do it yourself. You can get a TemplateMonster for around $45.00 on up to $75.00, or get a designer to make a site from anywhere from $80.00 and up. Really dpends on where you look. I would recommend www.loadingdeck.com, www.tammyhartdesigns.com and www.*****************.com for high quality hosting designer(s)

SSL: These can be pretty cheap. Stay away from thawte Consulting that charge like $299 for a certificate. Go with a Cheap GoDaddy one for like $35.00 or something like that (www.godaddy.com)

It all depends on your business plan, and how big you expect to be in months/days to come.

Good Luck,

Several years ago it was impossible to start a hosting company for less than a few thousand, but today it can be done with a very small investment. With Tim's pricing strategy, you will find that the capital required to start a small hosting business is very small.

Good decision, reseller plans are definitely the best way to start off. If you are successful at that, get a dedicated server and go from there.

No considering most companies charge "x" amount for you to be registered as a business.
