View Full Version : PayPal after having account closed?

Several years back I used PayPal exclusively for my web hosting/design company, and various auctions. I had 2 accounts, one was strictly personal, the other one was setup basically as a personal account, but was converted and used strictly for business only. I used my ss# for verification on the 'business' one.

Then after selling my hosting company, and tying up all the loose ends I took a break. Turns out I received a chargeback from an auction a couple months later, and my account was negative $80, and six months after that chargeback I found out about it in the form of a collection notice in the mail. I paid it right away, went to log into my 'business' PayPal account and it was closed, says it can not be appealed or reopened. So I go to my personal PayPal account and start using that again for online auction payments. After a week, I reached $1000 in payments received and it asks me to do 2 of 3 steps to verify I'm the owner of the account. I do the phone, and address ones, leave the ss# alone. A week later I complete the requested verification process. Then it says we are going to need you to verify one more thing, the ss#. So I try and it says it's already in use on another account (my other account).

My question is, now that I have a Tax ID for my business. Can I open up a new PayPal account and use that instead of my ss#. Will they link this account to my closed one? Is this allowed? Please let me know. Thanks

You should probably try calling the customer service line, and see if you can get the SSN added to your new account after explaining your situation. I don't think you can use a Tax ID instead of SSN.

Yes, you sure can... my business Paypal account is under my EIN number. You should do it that way anyway, since you don't want to mix your business and personal finances, unless you want headaches at tax time.

Alright, are you pretty sure this isn't against their rules? My first account says I am not allowed to reapeal the status of my account, or open a new account. I'm thinking that I'm not opening a new account, my business is opening a new account, but that is the main concern here.

When it comes to Paypal, you should ask if you are not sure. Call up their number and talk with someone in charge, ask for a manager. They will be able to give you more accurate information. While talking with the person, make sure to get their name and extension/badge number. You should make it a habit of doing so anyway, it can be VERY handy down the road.

Yeah, I agree. I just wanted to check here first, because I'm not sure if I call them and tell them I'm going to open an account in a business name, after my personal business one was closed, if they would just not allow it at all. thanks

I'd give them a call... I had something similar happen, and they cleared it up within 5 minutes. I was really, really surprised with the level of service from PayPal that day.

... I was expecting the worst!
