Why is it when someone mentions a host that is offering unlimited or an outrageous amount of BW that everyone in this forum attacks like a school of hungry sharks?

I know that is is impossible to fulfill such claims but no one ever says anything about DS.

Just visit the Web Hosting Request forum & see the replies to post left by potential hosting customers.....

There are a lot of host making the same outrageous & ludicrous offers for disc space as there use to be bandwidth.

I have been looking for a while & I have seen host offer from 500 megs to 2 gigs for as little as $3 per month, that is a blatant lie!

Even if there server had a 100 gig harddrive, they still wouldn't be able to handle but maybe 80 - 90 customers offering them 1 gig of space, and at $3-5 dollars per month with an overhead of $200 -$400 for a server, They would not make enough money to spit at!

This is just another sales gimmick in order to get customers hoping that they will only use a fraction of the space allotted.
By the way, The average web site still only uses about 15 megs.

I am sick & tired of all the offers for so little prices. I think we "Reputable & Honest Host" should band together & form a Web Hosting Union.
We could set price limits, space limits, etc. & market it like a Web Hosting BBB so that people wouldn't get burned from these sc-called Fly-by-Night web host.....We could form an advertising coop to get it noticed & listed on every hosting forum, host search site, or search engine.
There could be a board of directors to evaluate every host & make the determination whether or not they are of the quality to be represented by our Union & place a link back to the WHU site similar to verisign......

Just venting some steam.......I know I will get attacked for this but ,
Oh Well!

nobody likes a liar. its simple, no one trusts a liar.
you wonder why you don't have friends who are liars?
Its because no one can trust one. Would you trust a liar in the hands of your company website?

liars liars liars!

The reason they offer large amounts of space is that they hope that people will not use it, to be honest who needs 500mb of space for a web site?

It's called overselling.

unlimited bandwidth never leads to "good things"

unlimited bandwidth will usually be hosted on junky servers, hosting junky sites! Porn, adult, ect....all the mess that slows servers down

let's say you join one. Since somewhere in their TOS their fine print might easily have a "limit" to their bandwidth. As stated above, this is misleading, and not professional. It's like false advertising.

Mcdonalds can show that huge juicy cheesburer on televesion, but when we get it in real life, it will always be a tiny piece of meat with some sort of yellow cheese squished with pickles....it's not what you expected....and sometimes...not what you wanted

Isn't Price Fixing ILLEGAL?

I understand and agree with your complaint, but I don't think a union aka "Good ole boys Club" is the answer. Education & Communication is the Key..... Teach your potential customers what to look for when selecting a new host and the disadvantages to OVER over-sold hosts.

Just my 2 cents worth

Unlimited bandwith is NOT ok cause it is a lie... but unlimited or outrageous HDD space is ok cause if you use it your traffic gets higher and you pay more so the host actually gets more... also is HDD space a one time expense for the host but bw is a monthly thing.

Well, I don't find 500 MB all that outrageous ('tis a bit high), but for the love of St. Lucky Charms, pleeeeeease just put a reasonable cap on it so your customers don't think you're able to supply a never ending amount of something for $3-whatever/mo. that actually costs money per MB. If thou shall not heed our desperate pleas, we shall shun thee.

Bandwidth is one of the largest cost factors and has to be paid monthly, while disk space is cheap and usually a one time expense, so anyone can just plop in a new hard drive.

$3 per month for 500 MB of disk space is definitely possible. If you want to see outrageous, search for "web hosting" on eBay. You'll see offers like 10,000 MB for $20 per year! Now THAT is a blatant lie.

Even if there server had a 100 gig harddrive, they still wouldn't be able to handle but maybe 80 - 90 customers offering them 1 gig of space, and at $3-5 dollars per month with an overhead of $200 -$400 for a server, They would not make enough money to spit at!

Most people won't even come close to using 50 MB, so they oversell, which isn't bad, as long as they can provide what they advertise to the customers that actually use all of what they advertise. If they need more room, they can simply add another hard drive.

This is just another sales gimmick in order to get customers hoping that they will only use a fraction of the space allotted.

There's too many variables to set price, space, and bandwidth limits. What might be possible for one host might not be possible for another host.

There could be a board of directors to evaluate every host & make the determination whether or not they are of the quality to be represented by our Union & place a link back to the WHU site similar to verisign......
