According to snapnames.com, the registrar of a deleted domain needs to send a "Delete" command to an organization called "The Registry."
http://www.snapnames.com/deleteprocess.html

Who is the registry? Is it possible that the delete request for my domain name was never sent? It has been on hold for 6 months now and has yet been made available. Can I make a request to Network Solutions to resend this "Delete" request and will this help, or can I somehow contact the Registry directly?

To refresh your memory, my domain name has been replying
"Domain not found locally, but Registry points back to local DB... " since Nov 5, 2001.

Network solutions is the only registrar that publically puts domains onhold. Thus, they are the Registry, as they and Verisign own and manage the domain databases. Sometimes domains put onhold will not be released for whatever reason, and you can only wait until NSI drops that domain, there is nothing else you can do.

The Registry for COM, NET and ORG domains is Verisign.

You can find their contact information at http://www.verisign.com/support/contact.html#domains

Good luck!

VeriSign is Network Solutions. They are the same company.

Registrar complaints should be made to ICANN at icann.org. Of course, you might want to check this site out as well.

Welcome to the wonderful world of S.O.L., brought to you by your friends at Verisign the Registrar and Verisign the Registry. Of course Verisign the Registrar pays the fees for all the on hold domains to Verisign the Registry (a completely separate entity *wink wink*), just as other registrars have to (*nudge nudge*).

Take heart my friends, NetworkSolutions actually released one of the domains I was looking to get. It only took seven months after expiration for them to decide to release it!
