How well will a server like this perform on a tweaked freebsd and apache? Is Scsi allot better than eide?
nice hardware, but if you'd add 512 RAM more and make SCSI HDD instead of EIDE it would be much better..

Well that really depends on what your going to be doing. I have SCSI and IDE servers w/ everything the same except the harddisks....and guess the performance difference....none. Mainly because the servers serve just static apache pages and the harddisks are hardly hit.
I second Dilhole's opinion.
Back then (in the 90's), you can notice a significant difference between SCSI and IDE. But today, the difference is really not that much, if not at all. Yes, SCSI may still be better (slightly) in some area, but looking at the cost, I would go with EIDE. It is by far more cost-effective compared to SCSI.

Hmm, thanks. I guess I went overboard with a few of my machines. I have two dual machines with scsi and a quad xeon sitting around. I could have bought ten of these type of servers instead =/ I only use them to serve html pages too.
Are we talking about the new quad Xeon PIII or the older one?
If what you have is the old one, it may not be as fast as dual PIII. I've tested Dual PIII 1Ghz with Xuad Xeon 550 in NT and Dual PIII 1Ghz is noticably faster. Plus, quad Xeon takes longer to boot. :)

DOnt' feel bad .. sometimes cheap is not the way to go .. I was chekign my servers uptime the other day, my 2 expensive servers have been up for 120 and 140+ days ,, that tells me allot ;)

Celeron 600 MHz how well do they perform in freebsd? I have a 500 Mhz celeron labtop and have experienceds a 670 Mhz celeron HP desktop and they really suck under windows. Anyone use celerons?

I wouldnt put anything under 1ghz of a celeron in a server, and I would avoid them if it was possible. If your short on the money get an AthlonXP, just make sure its got plenty of circulation.

Again, all depends what are your needs. We have had several servers with the following technical specs: 450Mhz PIII server with 256MB RAM, 9GB Ultra 2 7.2k RPM SCSI drives that served over 200 customers with dedicated IP per domain and had rather high PHP/PERL/MySQL usage and everything worked perfect. Each system had over 200 day uptime and delivered close to 100GB monthly traffic and hey it was three years ago or so.
I don't want to advertise but I know a company still running 75Mhz Pentium that servers over 200 domains with dedicated IP address and over 300 free 5MB accounts. It has 64MB memory. The system CPU is running at 80% of it's speed and has had uptime of over 180 days. The system delivers over 60GB monthly traffic. No MySQL db. No DNS server running on it. Just apache + php and of course full CGI and .htaccess. Oh jesus, just don't flame me for it! :)
ps. hey and remember the time when a real computer geek could give his right hand just to get something better and faster than old 8Mhz processor and black-and-white monitor....
