View Full Version : If you operate a managed hosting company, what does managed hosting mean to you?

Greetings:

Please only answer the poll if your company provides managed hosting services.

Over the past seven years we've found managed hosting to mean different things to different providers.

Some Internet Data Centers (IDC) and hosting providers believe they are providing managed hosting because they manage the network and provide a network SLA.

Others believe true managed hosting means managing everything from the network to the hardware to the operating system (patches + operating system upgrades) to firewall management to server management to database administration to application management.

When you state you offer managed hosting to your customers, what managed services are included? What's not included?

What is the response time? What is the resolution time? What's the fine print?

Thank you.

I don't offer dedicated servers unless a client comes in and ask for it... so it would be 100% custom solution. But a managed hosting means that I would do everything possible to keep the server at 100% in updates and patches. the client would give us full complete access to there server and the codes for there software. I would in turn check for updates on a 3 day schedual. then I would make sure to update the baby every time.

Mike,
We usually only install updates after they have been proven, unless they are a security update. With a production server it is always a little leary to install the latest greatest patch, especially in linux land. I remember breaking PHP functionality on some users scripts by upgrading PHP about a year ago.
