I am about to start my hosting company and I would like to know what percentage of people use their bandwidth (i.e. joe blow buys a 10 gig a month plan and he uses between 8 and 10 gigs.)

Thank you!

Most of them use way less, a few of them use most of it

I know what you are thinking..."now I (you) will be able to set up more plans on the same server".

Well be careful how far you go (obviously)....they are legally all entitled to uninterupted service even if they all use the max amount allowed....

I'm going to resell hosting, the plan I want to get has 50gigs of transfer. I was wondering how many people I can get on it if I sold them 10 gig plans. I'll probably get 10 or 15 on it, If they end up using more as a whole I can buy a gig for $1.

I am not so luck as others within this industry.

my last bill was for 800 gigs of B/W which I billed all of it out. I think I have about 3 - 8 % of my client base which is under there alotted bandwidth ( i got the best clients )

most of my clients are in the 100 meg to 1 gig per day range. Which is my target market anyway.

But as mentioned before, yes you can think that you can load a server with alot of users, but the fact is that the server will only handle so many clients. in windows ( my platform ) I have seen as little as 100 domains, or as high as 211 domains. I've seen unix platform people brag about hosting 500+ domains on a server ( unacceptable risk by my standards if you go down )

just make sure you can run over your allowed amount without getting cut off

It really depends on the type of market you target. For example if you target the SMEs (assuming who will use the site substantially to establish their brand name, products, services or something similar) then it will most _likey_ use up a fair amount of their allocated bandwidth now or in the near future.

However, if you target the residential/personal use market then the bandwidth numbers wil most likely be significantly lower on average.

Average per client at Echolima I'd say is around 2-5

Greetings:

Our parent company offers web hosting.

The average shared hosting customer uses 5 GB or less; a lot depends on the age of the site and how much marketing they are doing for the site.

There are several shared customers that do between 5 and 10 GB.

Dedicated customer usage varies from 10 GB for several customers to over 450 GB for one customer with two dedicated servers.

Thank you.

Our average is less than 1GB but we do have some who use all of their bandwidth.

We have sold many gigs of banwith and most clients use less than half the amount they purchased

Yeah, you should hear those $1.75 per month customers scream when the hamsters quit.

I decided to go with rackshack instead of reselling(more controll) I'm going to put no more than 50 people on 1 server(amd duron 1gig, 512mb ram, 400gb bandwidth) I think I can do that without overselling too much(5%) Thank you guys for your responses, these forums are a great help!

I have been asking this question for a while and have still not come up with a solid average. I have seen averages of 2 GB per client per month and have seen as high as 8 GB as well on virtual domains.

I would like to get a more concrete picture of the situation and am thinking about starting a pole on my site (personnel site that is) regarding this and see what the outcome is.

Of course I would actual need to do 2 poles to get a decent picture. One for virtual hosting and one for dedicated/colo hosting.

This way I could, maybe, get enough feedback to actually come up with a rough industry average to help others make a more informed discision.

hmmm.

Only 50 web sites on a server with 1 GHZprocessor and 512 MB Ram! Are you nuts!

(no offense)

I apreciate that you dont want to oversell too much, but you do actually want to make money right :D

You could have upto 100 to 200 web sites on that server with no problem, and should have if you want to be profitable.

Just my 2 cents :)

The reason you don't get a solid answer on bandwidth usage is because we're all targeting differnt groups of people. I host mainly gaming websites, clans to be exact, they tend to use very small ammounts of bandwidth.

If you want to get a better answer, you should ask how much bandwidth people from (some group) tend to use on average.
