As I search for the perfect domain name for the mulitmillion dollar site I am planing to build I find it is not available in ".com" but is available in ".net". Will the ".net" be just as good or should I change my name to one that can be found as a ".com"?
:D

If the name is good I say go for it, I've got the .net but not the .com for my multi-million pound site (although the .com has expired and I'm hoping to grap *touch wood*)

You can change your mind later about the name and just redirect traffic or ditch it altogether, after all, what is $10 compared to the $1,000,000 you're going to make :stickout

If you want the "mulitmillion dollar site" find a .com.

The .com is worth about 5 times the value of the .net.

However, if it is a real good name and if it is not in the same business as the .com (so you won't lose business to the .com when people enter incorrectly), then it may serve your purpose.

Let's face it people remember a name and type it in as dot com everytime. I even do by accident. I've probably lost all of my potential business to another site simply b/c they own the .com of the same product despite the fact I print the name .INFO on advertisments. People probably throw away the flyers then remember the buzz word of the product then type in the dot com when they get home and think they have found the site.

That's exactly why I registered both. Luckily I found the .com was recently available and snatched it faster than I could get my credit card out of my wallet. When I first registered our domain, only .net was available and the .com of the same name was for something completely different. Keep watching for the .com and have both go to the same place when you can get it.

If you have a multimillion dollar budget and the name is not being used for a successful site, it's probably worth making an offer to buy the .com name. Unless it's a very special name or being used by a very successful site, the amount you'd probably pay would make only a very little dent in a large budget.

Thanks so much for your expert advice. I have managed to purchase a .com that will do nicely.
