Ive been searching for a suitable name for my name for the past few days. Something which comes up quite often is when i try the address, the site is taken but will have nothing or no relation to the site.

Here is one example :http://park.parkingdots.com/index.php?domain=yourchild.com

What is the point in these?

(btw this was typing yourchild.com)

Is this commen?

Thanks

It's an advertising site - you goto "yourchild.com" and you end up on this parking page with lots of child-related categories which look somewhat interesting, so you start clicking on them. The owner of the domain makes some money from the advertisers on that page who pay per click.

Quite often, if you let a domain drop because you no longer need it, one of these companies will pick it up hoping to get the traffic and therefore, the clicks. From what I hear, it can be quite lucrative.

However, I hate it, and yes, it's all too common.

This is a parking page, many people/companies do this for PPC. Is this your domain name?

@ cprompt: Thanks. I also checked out some others like this and the domain name ends up belonging to a company which has the name for sale. In many cases charging upwards of £2000+ for it!

@ dmaven: I see. No, not my domain name, but one of my considerations further down the line.

I started off thinking choosing a name was gonna be a lot of fun. A few days of finding all my ideas sitting "parked" or inactive is really doing my head in! Wouldn`t be so bad if they were actually in use, but hey, i guess thats the internet sometimes..:crap:

That's the real bummer - what a waste of internet resources :fork:
