What is the best server monitoring software? I would like something that will inform me if any services are down on my server.

I would like something that would notify my on my cell phone perferably.

Thanks in advance for you time.

You might want to check out Nagios (formerly NetSaint) at the following URL: http://www.nagios.org/

There's also Big Brother at http://bb4.com/, but it's not free for commercial use.

I believe Big Sister is a free clone of Big Brother. You can get that at http://bigsister.graeff.com/

Hope that helps.

Just remembered another: IP Sentry. It looks like it's no longer free though (I thought it was). You can download a demo version to try it out though.

Is there any that will both monitor and allow me to have a status page for my clients to view?

Which one is the easiest to use and install. I am new to all this

Greetings:

We are biased on this subject matter.

NTT/Verio uses our system for their enterprise clients as it handles both server monitoring as well as providing service level agreement monitoring.

Thank you.

cheers What's up Gold is definitely a nice program (in fact, I thought I had included it in my original post). I believe that communitech.net uses this program to monitor their shared hosting servers.

The only problem is that it has a price tag of $800-$1100, which may be a bit much for companies that are just starting out. At any rate, it's certainly worth downloading the demo version and playing around with.

..What'sUp Gold doesn't come cheap, that is why I mentioned that I knew of a couple of data centers which was using this.

If you had a bunch of servers that you wanted to monitor then this would be a good alternative.

This btw, runs on a Windoze machine

www.netsaint.org does all this. It is free too. We use this to monitor all our shared and dedicated servers. With some plugins, you can monitor MySQL and other service on top of the standard services.

Didn't see this. I can't see a difference between the two. Anotherwords, why is their two projects?

Although according to the Netsaint site, development for Netsaint has stopped. The program will live on with a new name (which I posted above).

More info here: http://netsaint.org/upcoming.php

Didn't see your edit before posting... I'm not sure. He doesn't go into detail about why the name has changed. The licenseing seems to be the same for both products... maybe he just felt like it was time for a change. :)

The reason for the change from netsaint to nagios was a problem with the name. Appearantly someone else already had rights to the name. My guess is SAINT. Anyhow, there are only some minor changes to the last version of netsaint, and the latest version of nagios. Nagios has a few more things built into it, and runs a bit smoother (not that netsaint didn't run smooth).

As for what's up,... I had to use that peice of crap at a former employer. It crashed constantly, and frequently missed alerts. I would never pay to use it, unless they've done some serious work on it.

You could try demarc if you're really good with servers. (It's hard to install) but if you do get it installed, it is worth it.

Demarc is great, but I don't recommend it on a per server level. If you want to go this route, I'd suggest using a dedicated IDS machine, as snort can chew through some resources.
