View Full Version : IE7: Still A Piece of Crap

Well the IE7 Beta 2 Preview has been released, and I regrettfully note... still a piece of crap. How is it an organization like Microsoft with all the resources in the world still won't update their browser to be fully compliant. I'm sick and tired of having to do these "hacks" and "quick fixes" to make things work with IE6... so I was really hoping everything would be standardized when IE7 rolled out. NOPE. Man almighty. Where do I donate to make Mozilla/Firefox the browser of the web!?!?

We're already discussing and devising hacks for IE7 (http://www.iwdn.net/showthread.php?t=3605), to account for the fact that they've not fixed most of the IE6 CSS problems, but they took away the ability to use * html to target IE browsers. Now, you're forced to use stupid IE conditional statements.

I installed IE7 but it completely wrote over my IE6 without warning. Do you know a way of getting IE6 back? I'll check out your "hacks for IE7"... lord knows I'll need them!

Yep, the IE7 blog warns you about this. I think uninstalling it will restore IE6, but I'm not positive. Or at least there's a restore point that goes with IE7 to allow you to go back a step to IE6.

But no, you cannot run both at the same time. This is another item of concern discussed in that link.

Lol just the Microsoft way. They won't change to match standards, the standards will have to change to match them!

Well it is in beta, we can only hope that IE7 will conform better by the time it is released. currently, no browser is perfect, even mozzilla has a big error in its content-area calculation on a table using border-collapse:collapse that is quite frustrating, but at least things get fixed to conform to standard while a year ago microsoft was saying they wont be fixing ie6.

On another note, someone already found a DoS method to crash IE7, microsoft says they already know about it, they better fix it before someone finds a way to execute code during the crash.

I actually prefer the conditionals than having to hack up an otherwise standards compliant stylesheet. Of coruse best if the conditionals weren't needed either.

The concept of conditionals is a nice one. Using comment tags to deliver them is just plain asinine!

Regarding complaints about Microsoft beta code: I participated in the Windows Media 9 public beta. It was buggy and they couldn't be bothered to fix most of the bugs before it went public...so I've learned my lesson not to waste my time communicating bugs to a company that can't be bothered to fix them. I'll wait under the IE7 has been out awhile.

You can uninstall IE7. Just check Show Updates in Add/Remove Programs and IE7 will show up in the list with the Windows updates/patches that have been installed. I did this on XP Pro about 1 week ago with no problems.

No hacks are needed if you use proper code. 9 times outta 10 if I code and check with FF it will be right in IE. Very rarely will I have to add additional code to correct a problem, I only see this as being more thorough than a hack.

I wouldn't be so quick to come up with IE7 hacks, as this is just a pre-release to Beta 2 and many of the rendering bugs that are still present will be adjusted before the final release.

If you're a developer and really want to see what IE7 has done so far with changes, I would recommend going with the standalone version, as the installation of IE7 will replace your IE6 installation and that can't happen.

Google for "IE7 Standalone" and its the first result, as a new member I can't post the direct link

I think the moral of the story is that IE7Beta2 is there just to show the developing community that they aren't sitting around doing nothing, but they're far from ready to release. So don't worry about IE7 hacks just yet.

Why don't you just stick to FireFox anyway instead of using the cheap IE copyhacks?

When I was searching for the new features of MSIE7, I found this (a bit old but funny reading):
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2004/07/21/190747.aspx
A suicide attempt from MSIE test manager

And blog is closed to new comments, guess why...

Because people who view your site do not all use firefox.

IE6 is workable but 7 is terrible both for browsing experience and coders

we can only hope that IE7 will conform better by the time it is released. They already said it won't according to the IEBlog. They fixed 7 CSS bugs and added two from 1998 and that's all they are doing. So essentially, IE7 is IE6 in a new package.

I had my hotmail account upgraded to live mail. It was working fine in IE6 but live mail doesnt open in FF because it says you need IE6 or higher.
Now that I installed IE7 beta 2, half the time live mail doesnt open or display properly.

And how abt its security !

Other than Joomla dropdown menu's posing a problem, I haven't really encountered any major issues with IE7. I've had it installed for about 2-3 months now and I really like it.

I still have IE6, which I've never had any problems with. IE7 is pretty bad.

All of my sites operate fine in IE7.... I like IE7, it does have some issues, but it is a beta, as many have pointed out already.

Microsoft is now providing free versions of Visual Studio as separate packages which are actually pretty good even for basic applications for prodution purpose.

I find it hard to believe that they are going to start charging for the browser.

Well at least IE got tabs. I really can't believe people browsed without them (and still do).

Feel sorry for Maxthon, because it were the IE with tabs...

IE7 Release Canditate 1 is available.
I have used it, and am using it. A lot of fixes & patches have been applied since the beta, and Microsoft have worked very closey with W3C to ensure full compliance with the new CSS standards.

Internet Explorer RC1 is available from:

Color me a cynic, but I can't wait to see how they botch CSS2.1!

The new IE7 on my end is super slow. Not only that but it is darn near impossible when you startup to have it stop loading the home page incase your in a hurry. Ugg - in my opinion they went from crap to a full blown BM spillage.

A little off topic but I do like the website someone has created for IE7 ...
