You could also buy a cheap workstation and stick Linux on it and anything else you want and colo it..it would turn out cheaper in the end :)

I remember a company (I forget the name) that offers (or at least did) $49.00/month dedicated servers, but they were not all that great of a company either...

sprocketdata.com (http://www.sprocketdata.com) offer tiny p133 servers for $35/month. Yes, those aren't exactly the best servers but for the price, it did fine for me. I'm hosting 2 websites and running an ircd, it's doing great. Their support is very good, the manager is a nice guy aswell ;)

Hmmmm. We were wondering where the spike in our site traffic and sales emails was from and we traced it here. Thanks for the kind words Nadav. As you've learned, we're always happy to help! :)

FWIW, we're out of 133's and are subbing 166's for the time being. I believe we have about 9 left out of our Monday allotment.

Best regards,

Jeffrey Johnston
Director of Operations

It's not just you, shows up over here too. ;)
If Chicken's edited somebody's post, it's with good reason. :)
But this is off-topic chat. Mods: feel free to delete these 2 posts.

DefCon, the $35 boxen all include 1gb/month. Overages are $5/gb, but all clients can prepay for traffic which usually brings it down to about the $3.5-3.0/gb range.

To help prevent expensive overages, each of our colo and dedicated server clients receives a weekly "traffic report" via email. It breaks down their usage for the previous week, as well as month to date.

Oh, and my earlier post was edited due to a manual sig. I've since learned the error of my ways. :D

I know a bit of redhat and apache, but not confident in running my own dedicated server. What's a good "managed" dedicate server???

How's *****? Or Interserver.net?

Question: just how difficult/time consuming is it to set up a secure redhat box? Is there any good books/online resource in setting one up?

thanks

My recommendation is to stay away from providers that offer dedicated servers for less than $99 per month, unless all you need is a server like the one Sprocket Data offers. Otherwise, you're probably asking for trouble. Remember, cheap is not always best. It would help if you described what you want to use the server for so we can make a better recommendation. Perhaps a virtual dedicated server would be a better solution if you don't want to spend much.

$59/mo Duron processor, 128MB, 20GB hard drive, 30GB/mo transfer. http://www.hostrack.com

We used to sell almost the same thing for $99/mo but we lowered our prices and include more bandwidth to stay competitive.

Maybe this should be moved to offers or requsts....? :D
