View Full Version : Free/cheap DNS service, and Email forwarding... ?

We are switching registration from GeoCities to GoDaddy, and now we need DNS control: reliable DNS service and domain management.

GoDaddy registration provides email forwarding, but does not seem to provide DNS control... according to Mike at their support department, you must buy GoDaddy web hosting to get DNS control, but we already have web hosting at SiteKreator.com... and we already have email at Yahoo and Gmail...

We do not want to buy web hosting at GoDaddy -- just to get DNS control. We have a business account at SiteKreator.com for web hosting!

We can cut loose from GeoCities ($10/month) if we can control DNS -- the A record, CNAME, and MX records -- from somewhere else.

Any suggestions?

SiteKreator.com hosts websites with great templates and features ... but no DNS support...

Thanks, I will try zoneedit.com :)

Unless something has changed very recently, you get access to Total DNS Control with every domain you have registered there. You just need to use their "parked" DNS servers via the control panel, then you can launch the DNS control panel to edit your records. My guess is someone was just trying to earn some extra comission by talking you into something you don't need.

There was just a fairly decent/long thread about this. I highly suggest using the search tool.

For Free DNS management, I prefer MyDomain.com.

I couldn't find any DNS management available on GoDaddy, but I'm fairly sure, that I've read somewhere that you can email your DNS management changes to support. Not perfect I know. You might try emailing their support for clarification.

I also found this at GoDaddy.....

Off-site DNS management allows you to manage the advanced DNS settings for domains that you have registered with other Registrars from your GoDaddy.com account.

Which looks like it's free. Interesting, that you can manage DNS for domains not registered with GoDaddy but there is no feature like this for GoDaddy domains :(

Also, I wouldn't put your domain registration and hosting with the same company.

Just go to manage domains, set your nameservers to the "Default parked name servers". After that you should have an option for manage DNS records or something similar on the right-side menu that when expanded gives you a link to "Total DNS Control". You only see the DNS control panel option if your name servers are pointed to GoDaddy's parked or hosting DNS servers.

Godaddy's DNS management is pretty good. The way to manage it is a little confusing but it works pretty well

OK. I found it now. Thanks. Never had any reason to use it up until now. But nice to know it's there.

Eureka!

Changed one domain to Parked at GoDaddy, then I see the TOTAL DNS control panel.

MX Records
The MX Record is used to control where email sent to your domain will go. Usually it is not necessary to modify this record. Occasionally it is necessary to host a web site with one network, but have an email hosted somewhere else. Those in this situation will need to modify the MX Record for the domain through this control panel.

Why can't I delete some records from the DNS interface?

I will now agree with you, Len.

Much happier with GoDaddy now that DNS control is working!

Now that DNS control and Email forwarding is working OK, I am much happier with GoDaddy!

Domain registered at GoDaddy... DNS + email control at GoDaddy... Website hosted at siteKreator.com... Staff Email at Yahoo and Gmail. AOK now! :) (http://www.v7n.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif) Small business (tight budget) website...

$70/yr at SiteKreator.com for (business account) web hosting, but no DNS.

$20/year ( Yahoo ) for Email.

DNS (free with $8/yr. registration) via GoDaddy.

Problem solved, under $100/year!
