Stan Marsh 01-29-2006, 04:01 AM Also, please remember - you'll get what you pay for. Just please do NOT come back to us to whine about the problems you have both with iPower and/or Yahell.
Good luck!
cprompt 01-29-2006, 07:01 AM Bring back the days when a domain was like $50 or more *sigh*
Stan Marsh 01-29-2006, 08:20 AM Bring back the days when a domain was like $50 or more *sigh*
Well, I *DO* recall days they were $70.00 for 2 years (with $35.00 for renewal), but frankly, can't remember anything like $50, let alone more... :)
cprompt 01-29-2006, 10:54 AM My first domain, a .co.uk, was £50 for two years. This was back in about 1995 or so though. Didn't buy many domains in those days :D
Stan Marsh 01-29-2006, 11:00 AM Oh, if we're talking ccTLDs here, I think even now you can find something for $200 or even more. :)
dmaven 01-30-2006, 10:48 PM I remember registering a name without paying anything and MAYBE getting an invoice for it.
darthvadersmaster 01-30-2006, 11:48 PM Can't imagine how horrible that would've been, $50....
dmaven 01-30-2006, 11:52 PM For us old timers(cough) 50.00 is nothing
whatever 01-31-2006, 12:11 AM I remember when the only domain registar I knew (or could trust) was Network Solutions... $70 for a .com for 2 years, at least $130/yr for a ccTLD :)
Stan Marsh 01-31-2006, 02:21 AM I remember when the only domain registar I knew (or could trust) was Network Solutions...
There were times when Internic *WAS* the *ONLY* registrar...
Bashar 01-31-2006, 05:38 PM yeah it used to be $50/yr with 2year min so its $100 per name back then :) then its switched to $70/2yrs
we even used to get paper invoices from internic/netsol back then :D i sill have some laying around, maybe ill scan one of them and put em online :P
Stan Marsh 01-31-2006, 05:56 PM we even used to get paper invoices from internic/netsol back then :D i
Yes, I think I also have received one of these... For my first domain, 2 years initial registration. Not for the renewal though... :)
THAT were the times... Uh...
Bashar 02-01-2006, 11:32 PM 3 months of use worth of time for each name as trial period ? :dgrin:
tons of ppl used to abuse this including me when i was a teenager :P heh
darthvadersmaster 02-02-2006, 12:56 PM So let me get this straight...you guys liked paying more?
DomainWorks 02-02-2006, 01:09 PM Ahhh ...the good old days of $35 .com names. That's one "retro" trend that won't be back in fashion anytime soon.
cprompt 02-02-2006, 01:12 PM So let me get this straight...you guys liked paying more?
Actually, yes! You know why? Because then companies can concentrate on selling a service because they are going to make money from it and not having to cut their costs right back in order to be the cheapest.
Put it like this, if you could sell 1,000 domains for 20c profit a domain or 100 domains for $5 profit each, what would you rather do? And, more importantly, what business model would allow you to invest the most money in your company allowing you to provide the best service?
DomainWorks 02-02-2006, 01:16 PM Well, I *DO* recall days they were $70.00 for 2 years (with $35.00 for renewal), but frankly, can't remember anything like $50, let alone more... :)
Actually, Stan's right. Domains were $50 when I satrted buying them (1994) and the price was then lowered to $35. It stayed that way pretty much until Go Daddy busted that model for good.
Stan Marsh 02-02-2006, 01:30 PM So let me get this straight...you guys liked paying more?
So let me put this straight for you, mister... For domains - yes yes and YES. Althought we also are trying hard to work a deal or two at reputable registrars, but as cprompt duly noted, the main thing is service. Reputable registrar = Excellent service = more $$$.
Would you like your domain to disappear because when you thought you renewed and paid it actually expired, because registrar 'forgot' to inform registry about the renewal (courtesy os RegFly) OR your domain was suspended and put on hold because some n00b compained to registrar that you are 'spamming' (without inspecting email's headers) (courtesy of GoDaddy) OR you can't transfer away because the registrar is unwilling to give you EPP Authcode (courtesy of Yahell) OR you can't transfer away, because registrar asks you to submit so much paperwork that faxing all of it would cost you more than year's renewal fee at Network Solutions and after faxing all of it you're informed that 'there're nobody to look at this' (courtesy of Ipowerweb)? THEN you're free to use whatever cheap company you wish. BUT if your domain is really important to you and you have invested alot of effort and money to brand it, you might want to go with the best. I.e. expensive.
Good luck.

That actually were Gandi and Dotster to introduce ~$15 pricing...

Thanks for the correction. I forgot about Dotster.
Value is about more than pricing. I think the old adage of "you get what you pay for" continues to apply. Yes, I'll pay more (a little more, anyway) for additional domain management features and the ability to get support on the phone without a half-hour wait should a crisis ever arise. The difficulty is that the price vs. quality equation isn't predictable - i.e. the pricier registrars don't always offer better service and account management. You really need to shop around and ask around. Good thing we have WHT for that.

Hm, I see your point. Personally I'm not one who does the web designing, I just surf.
technanny 02-02-2006, 07:07 PM It seems people have a great deal of trouble with these cheapy registrations
mactopsuit 03-01-2006, 06:47 AM Try Namecheap.com or GoDaddy.com, the more established ones around.
kevhosting 03-01-2006, 07:21 AM Hmmm,
Anyone here actually know how Yahoo and Ipower does their $2.95 pricing?
cprompt 03-01-2006, 07:55 AM They sell at a loss in the hope that anything else you may (or perhaps have to) buy will give them their profit. In other words, it's a loss leader.
playpiano 03-03-2006, 08:27 PM See the Coupon codes section to save money but what ever you do don't use Blazernetwork, I've had nothing but trouble with them (they use Enom).

hahah Paper invoices. What a thought.
The internet was created when? Back in Early 90's was it? Probably 1993 or so?
service hasn't improved tho :( I lost my only domain, at Network Solutions because service was lousy back then also :(
Stan Marsh 03-04-2006, 05:03 AM service hasn't improved tho :( I lost my only domain, at Network Solutions because service was lousy back then also :(
Yes. I remember you must make any and all changes via email. Sender's email address was like the only identification of the requester. So it was like anyone could do with your domain anything he/she wished... :)
BTW, do you really think that NetSol hasn't improved since then?
carlitosway 03-04-2006, 11:49 AM service hasn't improved tho :( I lost my only domain, at Network Solutions because service was lousy back then also :(
You may need to try them out again. They probably are now the best. Hold times are maybe a minute. Try that compared to 5-6 minutes at domainsite, 11-18 minutes at godaddy, 20-25 at regfly or 24 to 48 emails at email only support companies
Stan. That comment was basically based upon other peoples experiences which i've read, compared to my past experiences with them. Their control panel is much better now. they're still $35 though, and extras are also still charged as extras, afaicr. The only reason I have domains at NetSol now is because they ended up there after buying them at auction. I hold a grudge against them for what they did with my personal domain before (I ever became a domainer). I will never give them any more of my money, no matter how competitively attractive they might become (an unlikely scenario, I know). As and when the domains are sold or renewed they'll be removed from my NetSol account. I'm even a "gold member" or whatever they call it. It's a joke (you get to register 5 domains for $75 and pay extra for the extras, and renew at $35 for the priviledge).
What do you mean by "hold times", carlitosway? All top registrars are instantaneous (well, under a minute) to register a domain and have it recorded in your account. Anything else is unacceptable, imho.
squareapex 03-09-2006, 03:23 PM I think domainsite.com and namecheap.com (my first choice) are the best domain name registrars.
sandrodz 03-09-2006, 03:32 PM well, I do register small amount of domains... but very small amount at this point, I've not processed more than 1000 domains. but u can give me a chance :)

While on the subject of getting what you pay for - what do other people do with the years of Quick Blog subscription they accumulate using the GoDaddy $4.89 renewal trick?
At last estimate I can Quick Blog thu 2010!!
Daniel.P 03-13-2006, 03:26 AM Moontamil - namecheap.com offer you to pay using a paypal account without a credit card or visa. They require your account to be a verified account (i believe) but you just deposit them the money through paypal. Their domains are more like $9, but they have a pretty good reputation and service. You might consider paying slighty more than $5 for a better service.
Hope that helps!
Daniel, I paid NameCheap using a non-verified account (iirc).
Stan Marsh 03-13-2006, 01:49 PM Gigahost.ro offers .com domains for free
