View Full Version : What happens if a domain expires during transfer?

Can anyone tell me what happens when a domain expires during a transfer, if the transfer has already been started?

I am almost positive that it will transfer as normal, renewing when it finally hits the gaining registrar. I can find plenty from ICANN regarding transfer of domains that are already in the expire grace period, but surprisingly nothing about domains that hit this grace period after the transfer has been started. I am hoping this lack of information means that there will be no problems!
Thanks

Well....maybe thats the reason all transfers automatically renew for a year.

And as I recall you have to place a transfer order before 7 days from the date the domain registration is due to expire.

I was thinking it was up near 30 days if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I have looked in to that though because all my transferrs have been mid year of the domain registration.

Obviously it is good practise to leave plenty of time, but I have unfortunately been in a position where I needed to transfer domains that were already very close to the expire date (about 5 days).
All the other transfers I have done came through in time, there is actually just one I am still waiting for, and today it expires, so that's why I'm very very slighlty edgy. My guess is that it will just renew itself when it does complete in the same way that a domain can be renewed in the grace period after it expires. I just don't like not being 100% sure!

Saw it in Namecheap.com

Please follow these simple rules to avoid issues with your transfer.

You can only transfer .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us, .cc, .cn, .com.cn, .net.cn and .org.cn domains at this time.

Regulations prohibit transferring domains that are less than 60 days old. Please wait atleast 60 days before transferring.

Regulations also prohibit transferring domains that will expire within 7 days. So, please transfer early to avoid this problem.

EPP authentication code will be required for .org, .biz, .info and .us domain transfers. Contact your current registrar to get an EPP code.

Please make sure the domain is not locked at the current registrars. Many registars place locks without your knowledge

I think they may be Namecheap regulations rather than ICANN ones though. I am actually transferring to eNom (and I have put in a support request on this). one thing is for sure though, eNom let me initiate the transfer about 5 days left, and there were about 3 more domains in the same boat, these have all transferred sucessfully already.
I have a feeling that this straggling domain is straggling because the admin contact for the domain missed the confirmation email, and therefore a period of 5 days must pass before the transfer goes ahead automatically. It's all very confusing, and I'm sure it shouldn't be!

If the domain is really worth all the trouble then I would suggest you renew before transfer.....after all it costs less than $10 for peace of mind and an additional year renewal. Nothing much to loose anyways.

I suspect what has happened is the admin contact on the domain (which is the company my client is moving away from) did not confirm the transfer confirmation email. .com transfers are automatic, but they do wait I think about 5 days for the admin contact to confirm or deny the process. Therefore, if the domain is still in this stage it can probably be renewed as normal by the current registrar. I have actually requested they do this, if indeed they can. I don't however think they would be able to renew the domain should the transfer be fully underway. Then again, I don't know!:smash:

depends on the registrar really

i managed to transfer expiring domains on registrars that allow it (after expire date)

but some locks the domain the moment it expires, thus u cant transfer it

I have been transferring at least 5 times a near-to-expire domains, when they hit grace period during the transfer. The main thing is to initiate transfer request while the domain is still in 'active' status. Everything else doesn't really matters.

There were no problems...

And yes, NameCheap has different practices/timelines.

Thanks everyone for your inputs.

To try and round this thread off with a nice clear answer, now I think I know about it...

The domain is moved into pending transfer status within 12-24 hours of transfer verification. From which time, no changes can be made to the domain, including expiration. So this is the critical time, if your domain has not expired by now it will be active at least until the transfer ends.

Once the domain is in pending transfer status, the losing registrar has five (5) days to release the domain to the gaining registrar.

To speed up the process, you can contact the current registrar and request they "ACK" (manually approve) the transfer at the registry, although not all registrars are willing to ACK transfer requests.

So essentially, individual company policies asside, you can transfer a domain at the last minute.
