Eddie, remove POP-Auth, then I believe the only thing you'd be able to do is send email through the server itself (pine I suppose).

I've tryed removing it ive searched all over for the pop auth feature and umm it wants to hide :(. Woul just deleting it work?. Like without doing anything major afterwards?

I don't see why not... search for the exact file name you installed (without the .pkg extension, possibly without any of the version numbers if that doesn't work) and there should be a directory called uninstall that surfaces.

At the prompt enter the full path to that file (including the file itself), and it should uninstall it without problems.

If you can't find it, let me know and I'll get you the path to copy&paste.

Ohhh, and by the way, I attempted to email you back but I kept getting the mail back. Odd that it came back as relaying denied on *your* end... Meant to mention that yesterday.

I looked to see exactly which version you installed so I could give you the correct path, but I couldn't find your post. If you post this, I'll give it to you when I get back today (for uninstalling pop-auth).

Copy&paste this in a telnet session:

/var/lib/cobalt/uninstallers/pop-before-smtp-1.2-4.uninst

(and hit enter)

If for any reason it doesn't work when you are logged in as admin, try su to root and copy&paste it again and hit enter.

Should be good to go. If you:

locate pop |more

-you should be able to see every and anything more or less related to this if you are still having problems. Kill the auth first though and see if that works.

Also note that:

/var/lib/cobalt/uninstallers

-is a gooooood directory to take note of. In this directory, you'll find uninstallers for the updates (handy in case you install an update that royally frucks up your system).

Thanks Chicken that uninstalled the pop-auth-smtp package. Or at least i think it as since it no longer shows in the control panel.

But i can still send mail through the server. I can even use outside accounts and use my server as there smtp and it sends the mail.

Do i need to restart anything? ive rebooted the server from the control panel.

I looked at all the features using the locate pop |more saw lots of confussing stuff.

here are a few things -

/var/lib/cobalt/uninstallers/pop-before-smtp-1.2-4.uninst
/var/lib/cobalt/pop-before-smtp-1.2-4.md5lst
/var/run/poprelayd.pid

then a load of other stuff for the first few sites on the server. Do i need to remove any of those files? and how?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by, "I can even use outside accounts and use my server as there smtp and it sends the mail."

So using a program like Outlook Express, if you set up the smtp server and check 'requires authentication' and enter account info there, it will send the mail, eh?

I get the feeling it isn't uninstalled. -But I'm not familiar enough with the the script to know if md51st is (for sure) the sign of that.

I wouldn't touch poprelayd.pid, but just for kicks, you now know where pop-before-smtp-1.2-4.md5lst is supposed to be. Try moving it out of that directory to errrr... just your admin non-web accessible (root) folder and see if it still allows mail to go through.

In my experience, once you remove the pop-auth, it kills all relaying (except from the machine itself but one thing at a time).

Also, Steve might have someone who knows about completely cutting off all outbound mail. If you kill sendmail, various form scirpts (form mail, bulletin boards, etc.) won't work, so I still don't think this is the solution you are looking for.

How do i move a file in telnet? - i only know how to in ftp (sad huh?).

I mean i setup technics@flashtechnics.com to send mail through my server - put mydomain.com as the smtp server. Instead of using Hostrockets smtp server.

I also managed to still send mail between sites on the server.

Would installing the pop-auth that Felix suggested in the 4 page thread about 4webspace solve the problem?.

Thanks for all your help.

ok i found out how to move it .. When i try move it it says no such file or directory exists. and i tryed moving it into my /home directory.

Do these servers come with python installed? as i saw some python1.5 stuff when looking through the directory.

I can't remember what Felix posted, but I think it was the newer POP-Auth which (if so) didn't work on my machine. I'm not sure why, but it didn't and I uninstalled it and put the version you have/had on it.

As for the file not existing, errrr... well... it is there isn't it? Locate it (if so). Copy the path to it. CD to the directory it is in and then mv file.name /full/path/to/somewhere/else and it should (in theory) be where you put it.

Make sure you can move it back, I really have no idea if that will affect anything, or affect something in a bad way (the risk of playing, heh).

Maybe just renaming the file would be better... just disable it. I've almost lost track of what we're doing (not a good sign I realize), and what the problem was (see last comment), and what it is/isn't doing (see last comment), due to being wayyyy overtired from work.

I have a hell-ish week coming up starting 2 days ago.

heehee i kinda got lost too :).

Well i havent moved or renamed this file -

/var/lib/cobalt/pop-before-smtp-1.2-4.md5lst

since the server tells me its not there. Although i can see it. I found some other files further down which may cause it to send mail for anyone.

It's very confussing - i wanna be a reseller!!!!! lol

Well, just for kicks, to be sure, do a:

locate pop-before-smtp-1.2-4.md5lst

-in theory it should say it is here:
/var/lib/cobalt/pop-before-smtp-1.2-4.md5lst

-where we think it is. If so:

cd /var/lib/cobalt/
mv pop-before-smtp-1.2-4.md5lst /full/path/to/some/directory

Like I said, I really don't know if this will even help. I assume your uninstall was successful, even though you didn't sound 100% sure.

Have you had any proplems since? If not, it might be better to leave things alone and wait a bit to see. I've had a total of 1 email go through, and two attempts (which failed). I can live with that for now.

Says it isnt there. Well nobodys sent bulk mail or tried to as yet through the server since. Seems to be doing as it is told right now.

I stand corrected.

It's relaying some emails but denying others.

And them logs for emails dont have say some confussing stuff.
