View Full Version : Do I need a dedicated server if I have video clips?

I want to put some video on this site, not more than a minute long. Would that require a dedicated server? I don't think many people will really access it. Or can you recommend a webhost that can handle this small task? I'm doing a political campaign site and the guy wants to show a few things he's done. And there's only around 10,000 people in our town. I'm sure not even half of them have access to the web much less own a computer.....but what do I know? As elections come closer I'm sure there'll be more hits. Any ideas on what to do?

Hey!

No, you won't need a dedicated server for this.

I suggest submitting a request in the Web Hosting Requests forum with your requirements. You're sure to get some good offers.

Good luck!

The only things that matter are bandwidth and hard disk space. If you get both (appropriately) in a shared account, you do not need a dedicated server just for a few video clips.

I'll take it up a notch.

How about streaming video. I hook up a camera in a popular area and people from around the world have the ability to move the camera around. ( I really want to learn how to do this.)

Now THAT would required it's own dedicated server....am I right? I have absolutely no idea how large a bandwidth it would take.

Well, everyone can't move one camera around at once... Streaming is possible but can be costly...

masood, when you say that you need more than a dedicated server what does that mean? Like excellent software? I have to do research on where to get this (and the camera) then I would have to look for a good web host that can handle the stream. As far as I know it would take a good camera, good software and a good web host that will run the software(?). Am I missing anything?

Alot of money, especially if the host will run custom softare. Remote control of the camera via the internet will be the most difficult thing to do. I don't know of any mainstream software that will do this. Are you sure u just don't want to stream it?

You will also need some software to send one stream from your camera to the webhost server, where it would be multicast using any of the streaming software.

That means custom setup, which means lots of $$$ ;)

Yep, I setup a stream for a local organization... The cheapest streaming software (not server) we found cost $200.

Alot of software like this can easily cost over $1000-$2000.

Thanks.

web_res, when you ask 'why don't I just stream it' do you mean aside of having it as live streaming I should capture a certain length of time, like a minute, then if people want to see it they can open up something like RealPlayer and watch this 60 second movie?

And what do mean when you say the cheapest streaming software (not server) found cost $200. Is there software that doesn't run on a server? What's the difference?

I know I must sound like a dufus but, hey, you gotta start somewhere.

What i meant by just stream it is, actually a live video stream without the "people around the world moving the camera" part.

The $200 dollar software basically captured the video from the camera and sent it to our streaming server.

We were using Mac OS X Server with Sorenson Broadcaster (The $200 dollar software) ... Not sure if it is the best choice in OS and broadcasting software but we already had mac hardware and the server software with it (quicktime streaming server).

do you know any BroadCaster Software which will run on linux server?

Actually how does the broadcaster software work?

Do I install them on my server or clien(where i have my digital camera)?
