View Full Version : The dumb things companies do with domain names

I've seen some pretty stupid things done with domain names, but this one almost takes the cake -

So I'm listening to a radio station in the car the other night. It's one of the big FM radio stations in Brisbane. Then an ad for an internet company comes over. The ad was good, but they get to their domain name, and it's a freakin hyfenated .net with "maxx" as the last part of their domain. After they said the domain, they had to spell it out, with the "maxx" (note the double x there).

Who was the genius who came up with this domain? Are they deliberately trying to self sabotage themselves or what? They're branding a hyfenated .net with a "maxx" (short for maximum) as the second part of the domain. To make things 10 times worse, they don't own the .com, or the non-hyfenated or the "max" version, and here they are trying to build that brand on a very large FM radio station.

Madness I tell you. Pure madness. :eek2:

You'd think for a company of their size, that they'd have the common sense to at least brand the right domain name, and not some hyfenated .net.

So being the good Netizen I am  I email the company, and suggest that they change their main domain name, or at least register all the proper variants, and point them up to their current domain. I gave them a list of 20 domains to register. Got an email back from someone saying they're happy with their current domain, and they're not looking to register any other domains, and to stop spamming them.

What the . . . . ? :eek2:

"Thank you for your concern. Our domain and name are what we feel best represents our company's vision, and feel that your suggestions lack merit or substance. We do value feedback from the general public, but do not appreciate being spammed from yourself, with the suggestion of buying more domains."

Well :cartman: fine then. Go brand your wrong domain. I tried to help, but nooooooooooooo, you know better. :emlaugh:

I would post their domain, but I don't want to name names, if you get my drift. I just can't imagine how folks can do such stupid things, when it comes to their domain/name/brand.

You can spend years building a great business, but if you get the first step wrong (your domain/name/brand), it doesn't mount to much, and you won't build a brand of real substance.

Oh well, at least you tried. :D

Then if someone else grabs any of the names you suggested and the company in
question starts complaining about it, they'll start pointing fingers at everyone and
anyone except themselves for the oversight. And to think someone was kind and
gentle enough to warn them about it.

I feel like ringing these folks and ask them why their website doesn't work. :D

Well... they were rude.... so....

Register the alternatives of their name yourself, I bet you'll get some traffic from their radio adverts ;)

I tried to help, and can't do much more than that. No skin off my nose. :)

What about the companies that replace an s with a z! That is almost just as funny as the hyphens!

I would love to have the .com, "max", or the non-hyphenated domain so I could get their FM radio traffic. :)
