View Full Version : Purchasing Hardware For Servers
HRBrendan 05-02-2002, 07:19 AM Anyone mind sharing who they use for a supplier for the following and what config they build (and even what parts/model numbers are used) when purchasing parts/supplies to build their own rackmount servers?
Cases
Power Supplies
MotherBoards
RAM
HD's
Processors
Also throw in an approx price if you know it. If a few people do this we may help one another save $$ or find better deals/hardware.

Samuel 05-02-2002, 07:37 AM This (http://www.racksaver.com/products/RS1112.asp) is where I start. =)
HRBrendan 05-02-2002, 08:04 AM I have had 4 racksaver boxes die on me in the past 2 weeks :( Not going to be purchasing more stuff from them.

magnafix 05-02-2002, 12:30 PM We're an extremely hands-on DIY shop, but building servers is one thing we've decided not to monkey with any more. I highly recommend http://www.qsol.com for reliability and amazing customer service. (Tell Joe Safai I sent you. )
I'll give Qsol the thumbs up as well, very good experience with Mr Joe Safai during our server purchase with them last year. Up till now their hardware is still going strong :)
HRBrendan 05-02-2002, 01:34 PM Argggg!! :) Does anyone actually build their own or no? I have like 30 qsol boxes :)

Jeffyt 05-02-2002, 05:00 PM Hey Brendan
This company (http://interpromicro.com/) I just bought from, also sells a variety of hardware for rackmount systems including cases. Kind of a noobron when it comes to building servers, but I found the LZS case pretty nice.
Heres one from there: RMC1N2-2 is the part number on that.
2 SCSI bays, 250W, room for 2 PCI expansion cards.
$367 or something like that on the price.
As far as the other hardware goes, you could go anywhere.
Target-usa sells cheetahs for $250. I'm sure there are plenty of dealers on those though.
Interpro micro sells Supermicro P4DL6's relatively cheap.
Or this link to the Intel SDS2 (Dual P3 SCSI board): here (http://www.interpromicro.com/commerce/product.jsp?product_id=2869&czuid=1020372657437)
RAM: crucial (cheapest outlet, some folks would balk probably)
Processors (and really, pretty much everything): Pricewatch
Anyway, hope that helps. I still owe you a t-shirt, I will go to the post office now ;) .
Regards,
Jeff

Dont tell me this ;) Im looking at buying 8 new servers from them next week. Which model(s) were the ones that died?
We currently buy from acmemicro.com, we built a few servers ourself but found the few bucks to pay a company to make all the componets fit/work in 1u servers was worth it.
Thanks
regier 05-02-2002, 06:36 PM Yup,
I have had troubles with at least 75% of my racksaver servers. I've been running dell for a while now and have yet to have any troubles. I just ordered my first qsol this week and joe was quite nice to deal with. If they seem like a reliable server I will probably order a batch to try them out.

I havent had any hardware problems from anything purchased from them yet. Most are scsi supermicro 6010/11's with a few tyanmb setups in there.
Thanks for the racksaver feedback. Im not looking at them anymore.
UmBillyCord 05-02-2002, 08:09 PM Since QSol got brought up in Mr. HRs thread :) ..... Joe is now buying server chasis from http://www.gigabytenetworking.com/gbn_main.asp . We just got our first. Nice. Clean insides. Big improvement.
David, give them a try.
First of all, I personally wouldn't buy any hardware from any
company with the name "saver" in it. Thats just asking for
trouble. :)
If you really want good hardware try rackmountpro.com. It's cheap and it rocks.
Good luck!
regier 05-02-2002, 08:32 PM I am glad to hear that qsol are buying good chasis now. That was the one thing that kept me from ordering there sooner. I heard that the servers used to warp a fair bit and that it was a lot quality chasis.

cheers,
CRego3D 05-02-2002, 11:20 PM Steer away from racksaver, after we start havign some problems, I cheked the components, it's quite bad that we and some customers paid so much money for the lowest quality brand motherboards you can fidn on pricewatch
if you want a really good, dependable and cheap supplier .. acmemicro.com

We are IDE guys. :) We got an SR103. As much as we hate to make our racks non-uniform, I think we will need to start getting these from here on out. :)
We got it directly through Joe at QSol.com. It is cheaper, plus as many have stated here before, they are a good company.
bstrawse 05-03-2002, 02:27 PM I've been buying slightly used servers from liquidators lately, mostly via their auctions on ebay. I try to buy locally (Boston) and have found a few firms that I deal with regularly.
I have almost all VA Linux boxes (now California Digital) - but I would also recommend Dell if you were out to purchase new.
I will check out qsol...
Thanks,
Bryan
JBIZ718 05-03-2002, 02:37 PM Many people may overlook IBM, but there pretty darn good on prices and offer a darn good product.
I would take there x300 as a sound entry level system, and there x330 for a dual machine.
Overall with there warranty I would take IBM over many of these smaller companies.
Joe
