View Full Version : Odd Sign-ups
SimonJohnson 01-18-2006, 10:10 AM I was wondering if someone could elaborate or share there past experiences.
I have over the last month picked up quite a number of people who have purchased webspace from us agreeing to update their nameservers to re-point to us, however.
- The domain isnt even registered yet!
I have created a ticket for each of these people asking if they are happy with the current level of service etc, havent heard back. Checked activity on the account, cannot see anything happening. Weird!
-The domain has been repointed webspace empty
I suppose this doesnt shock me as much as the other but its still wierd that someone 1 month on hasnt even played with there webspace, again another ticket has gone out.
On the whole i really cant complain as they are using 0% of our resources but at the same time i'd like to see them making use of the services we have sold.
Has anyone else has these sort of clients?
AH-Tina 01-18-2006, 10:34 AM Don't setup accounts that have no valid domain name. You're asking for trouble.
What was the reasoning the customer gave?

Hi Tina,
No replys from them but that was 1 day ago the email was sent.
We use modern bill so they have had to enter details like address & phone number. i might call the numbers registered for these users.
Its certainly not right is it ...
[inx]Olly 01-18-2006, 12:03 PM They could have planned to register it after...and forgot...I dunno...it would have raised my fraud alarm off too!
ScottJ 01-18-2006, 01:34 PM Sounds like trouble to me. They will most likely be sending out thousands of emails in a few days. Keep a close watch on them.
arkin 01-18-2006, 04:21 PM I've been the same, as a customer of a few companies now sometimes it took me weeks to actually get around to putting content up.
Sometimes it is nice to recieve a personal call though; a checkup from the company owner.
Amish_Geek 01-18-2006, 04:32 PM Or perhaps they just use the domain for email, and not for a website? Did they set up mail resources?
Patrick 01-19-2006, 02:59 AM I personally wouldn't worry too much about it, just keep a watch on things (as any systems administrator should).

Agreed, one of the checks I run is to see if the domain is registered. I also take a look at the whois information and confirm it with other things during my own fraud check.

Same here. Another trend I noticed is that a lot of scammers are using dedicated servers at Serverbeach and EV1 to commit their crimes...
DimensionServers 01-19-2006, 02:42 PM ive actually had similar signups this is very useful to know I shouldnt worry about it. Thanks guys
markjut 01-19-2006, 07:16 PM Sounds like somebody plans on sending lots of spam from the server :|
SimonJohnson 01-19-2006, 07:37 PM I have just suspended all the accounts which do not have registered domains. With contacts our@email.address to discuss the matter. Should sort it out.
Should i refund them if im still not happy with their reasons?
DimensionServers 01-19-2006, 09:51 PM I get these wierd hosting orders too. I guess you can never really tell what the end user is going to do with the hosting. Best bet is to try and keep everyone legit on the server.

Yep, just keep a close eye on everything and all should go well... <sits and watches his multiple exim logs waiting for someone to just try and spam> :D
SimonJohnson 01-20-2006, 05:20 PM Yeh i mean one part of me is saying. OMG they must have thought they were registering a domain but didn't. The other says "SPAMMER" shut him down.
Anyway no "weirdo's" today, just domain registrations ! :)
