ok...I'm starting up a free webspace provider - I'm going to try to offer cgi, php, and all the good stuff. I want to limit the user space to 25MB and I want them to have ftp access. Does anybody know of any FREE program that can do this? If no, can somebody please do it for me for free (or for little money)? :)

If you're dealing in Windows or Linux, go to a site called Dave Central (http://www.davecentral.com). Then choose your OS of choice and run a search. I know he's got freeware Windows FTP server programs but I'm not sure on Linux.

Actually I have a old version of homefree from http://www.solutionscripts.com but the thing is that you have to manually add php and cgi to it. Hey it has a FTP feature pending on what OS servers you use!!.

If you are using a server in your house and is windows based, try Sambar at http://www.sambar.com !

sorry to disapoint you but
if you offer cgi, php or SSI you'll have security holes and system resources abuse.
Home Free does not support ftp access (read docs carefully) and it is not free ($300-400).

What you want to create will require over $5000..

Running a free host is harder then running a pay host, usually.

Its a ccopyright software. Distributing it freely would be braking there Terms Of Service. I dun think anyone would wanna do that.

Why would you want to use a program that 60% of the free hosts out there already use?? An old version of it at that?

Not to mentioned, they catch you using a copy of their script without paying for it, you'll be in hell and high water. If you use it and you become even minorly popular, they will definitly notice. Besides, you dont wanna become a free host. Theres a reason there are so few free hosts compared to pay hosts, it's because 99% of them go out of business within 30-90 days of opening. 5 clients on a pay host makes you more money than 50(or more) on a free host.
