OK, let's see if my math is correct...

Several hosting biz promise 99.9% uptime. Lets take April for example: 30 days = 720 houres, right? So 0.1% downtime = 0.72 houres or 72 minutes.

Anyone here who actually made it? I mean didn't have more than 72 minutes downtime in April?

Bye the way... anyone who can tell me how to check the downtime for a particular website? Let's say I want to check the downtime concerning saab.com for the last 30 days, is this possible?

Thanks in advance!

.72 hours is not 72 minutes... Its closer to (approximately) 45 minutes.

Also... please let me know your experience when it comes to average downtime per month? (I'm talking about reseller programs)

zRedDice, good to see someone from a really big Web site. I use it playing backgammon since 3 years ago.

Not to speak before 2 years ago, that I didn't have ADSL, but since, I have never been disconnected from your site.

Of course big resources, but anyway congratullations to all of you.

I believe very few can stick to that, really. Everyone is using those figures that become unbelievable. It means nothing advertised on any webhosting site.

I have been checking hosting companies, and latelly used Alertra controlling every 5 minutes, and the figures some claim become quite ambar, no to put in the red.

Oh *turns red*

:) Its not "my" site. I'll pass your comments on to the Webmaster though. They're always appreciated. :)

I'm just a techie voulenteer, part of the 1500 man (and woman) Member Plus (sysop) team. :)

Its the best job I've ever had though. No pay, but quite rewarding.

43.2... 45... oh well... I didn't have a calculator... I rounded it to .75 *sigh* :) No need to change usernames... Like the Geico commercials say "We all do dumb things..." hey... I didn't know a thing about hosting until 3 months ago!

It's interesting that nobody answers my questions about downtime.

I think it's a very legitimate question to ask your future hosting company, don' you?

My opinion is that it would give credibility to the hosting biz who answer these questions.

Most of our servers have had no downtime in the past month.

Except one in the Equinix datacenter, we had to shutdown for about 4 minutes to replace a masterswitch.

Other then that we haven't experianced much downtime. Only time we go down is for reboot for new kernel.

But this past year as been lucky for us because we switched to all new datacenters and new providors. I haven't been this happy in awhile. : )

IMO, uptime gaurantees will go out the window as hacker instances become more common place. The internet is not a safe or stable platform.

It's business in a war zone.

Well since Yahooo is so insistent I will confess that I had 100% uptime in February, March and April

Cheers

Greetings:

(This is a copy from an email we sent yesterday to an email list we participate in concerning the reliablity of Verio's servers).

We utilize our Enterprise Network Monitoring System on all of our servers (btw, Verio's enterprise division utilizes this system as well).

Aside from reporting problems (database monitoring, content monitoring, performance, monitoring, etc.), it does provide service level agreement monitoring:

From January 1, 2002 through yesterday, the worse up time from a VPS customer has been 99.81%; the best was 100%.

From January 1, 2001 through yesterday, the worse up time from a VPS customer was 99.83%; the best was 100%.

There is approximately 8,760 hours in a year.

Four months is approximately 2,920 hours.

99.81% up time over the course of 2,920 hours (4 months) represents 2,914.452 hours of up time, and 5.548 hours of down time.

99.83% up time over the course of 11,680 hours (16 months; 1/1/2001 to 4/30/2002) represents 11,660.144 hours of up time, and 19.856 hours of down time.

5.548 / 4 = an average of 1.387 hours per month of down time.
19.856 / 16 = an average of 1.241 hours per month of down time.

If it matters, our monitoring system reported on and off down time in 4 minute intervals over the period of the time spans mentioned above.

Meaning, the down time noted above did not occur in a continuos stream of time, but four minutes here and four minutes there. There were other down time events that lasted longer than four minutes (system upgrades and the like); however, the majority of the down time was four minutes here and four minutes there.

I hope this information helps.

Thank you.
