Hey Guys!
I was wondering - these days, with so few good domains left, how many of your new clients register a new domain when buying hosting from your company?
My guess is that most people would be moving domains around - but am I wrong?
Has this changed a lot the last years?

thanks :)

Almost all of our clients have had domain names before they came to us, but we do have a few who have registered domain names during the ordering process. :)

With the few companies I've worked for as well as my current projects:

Almost 100% take advantage of it if you offer a free domain.
If you offer a decently priced domain: about 35% take advantage of it.

Domains are always migrating around - use webhosting.info to see the 'transfer' rates of some large hosts.

For example dreamhost has 1500ish transferred away from them every week.

Your poll should have included a "100%" option. All my clients have their own IDNs (Internet Domain Names), and the vast majority of purchased them through me.

yes, i know that 100% have IDN's - but i wanted to hear if they bought it through you - and "vast majority - more than 80%?

Yes. I don't know the exact number off-hand, but I'd wager a guess that ~90% bought through me because many of my clients didn't really understand what a web site was back in the 1990s (most people have a general idea now, but I find that many people in the market still don't really understand what an IDN is).

Most of the other ~10% already had a web site and switched over to me, and then there were a few who either speculated on IDN reselling (and a few of them hit it big with a few names, but that's a tough business best left for a different thread) or just had it for eMail only (many of my clients used eMail heavily, which I found to be uncommon among other hosting companies who saw most of their traffic in HTTP/HTTPS).

You might be interested to know that I had at least a dozen clients or so who wanted to choose an IDN carefully, so I got them set up with a third level under one of mine, and then after a few months or whenever they finally made their decision I set it all up for them. I don't count these as "no domain" because they did get an IDN shortly after signing up with me.

80% here. I sell mostly to local area and they start from nothing. However it would be less than 10% of my online customers.

finding this very interesting because I am just about to start out myself in the hosting industry.

Since customer support is our specialty, most of our customers are new to the hosting environment so about 90% get a new domain at the same time.
