View Full Version : Where to buy MasterSwitch
Josh C. 05-01-2002, 06:37 AM Anyone know what is the difference between MasterSwitch(AP9211) and MasterSwitch Plus (AP9225). I did goto apc.com and check it out. But we never used one before and it pretty damn hard to tell the difference from their website. They dont seem to make a comparision chart. Perhaps someone here has used both units and could share the experience. I think MasterSwitch Plus cost around $300 extra. I am just looking whether it worth all that.
Also, what would be the best place to purchase MasterSwitch.

The 9211 is a single stand-alone unit with 8 power plugs. All can be managed from the same IP
The 9225 is a Stackable unit with 8 power plugs. Multiple units can be "daisy-chained" together and managed as 1 unit. I think you can stack 3 or 4 together to end up with what appears to be 1 Masterswitch with 24 or 32 power plugs. There may be other smaller differences, but that's the major difference off the top of my head.
Always check Ebay for lowest prices. The 9211 usually runs about $250 on Ebay. Check Ebay (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&query=masterswitch&ht=1&st=2&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&category0=160&BasicSearch=)

Sorry, I am very new at this. Does that mean we can have only 1 set of login id and password? Or can we setup 8 set of login id and password for the remote reboot thing.
If we can setup 8 set of login id and password. Then what is advantage of managing from mulitple IP.
cbtrussell 05-01-2002, 10:55 AM You can have separate logins for each plug. There is no advantage in using multiple IP's, you want to only use one.
A 9211 will do everything you need; you can download the manual from their website.

iris99 05-01-2002, 12:01 PM I would check out the vertical units from Servertech (http://www.servertech.com), up to 64 outlets off of 1U of rack space.
Just my $.02
porcupine 05-01-2002, 02:29 PM Josh,
The apc 9211, and 9210 will do fine for any operation. The 9210 is virtually identical, they just made a few fixes on the 9211, but functionally i believe theres almost no difference, and some people are trying to get rid of the 9210's really cheap as a result (because they're upgrading for no real reason). But just heed my warning on one thing. If you buy a used masterswitch, make SURE to get the username and password. If not, you might have to rip the thing apart to get serial numbers, then put it back together, call apc support, and get them to encrypt the serial numbers inside the box to make a password, and take it from me, any of it is a pain. It's worth the savings if you pick a dozen up for half price, but it's still a pain if you're not expecting it.
cbtrussell 05-01-2002, 05:29 PM It's been a while since I looked at a 9210, but isn't it telnet only? While the 9211 offers browser based admin as well...?

Humm, not sure, that wouldn't be a biggie for many people though :), but worth looking into
mpope 05-01-2002, 06:12 PM I lost the password to my masterswitch (9211) and it was very easy to use a backdoor password reset on it. You just need to contact APC and give them the serial # (Which was on the back of my unit). They'll then give you the backdoor password and within a couple of minutes you can get the password reset to default.
Now, I don't know if it is as easy with the 9210, but I would think it would be the same... :D

Thats what i was saying was a pain.... On some units you can console in if the hardware version is 2.0+ and find the serial with the login apc/apc -s, but on older ones, you've gotta take them apart to get the serial number off the black interface card. Even having to wait an extra day to get a password is a pain IMHO if it doesen't have an ip address and you gotta be sitting there to do it, it means an extra trip to whatever you're doing :)

porcupine 05-01-2002, 08:55 PM Pretty expensive compared to ebay :)
ClusterMania 05-01-2002, 11:59 PM You can't always trust people off ebay.

Is there any class of merchant on the internet you can "always trust"? Not that i've seen, you can't trust many merchants in general, pay with a visa :)

Ebay is not a bad choice. But in my book, a brand new 9211 cost around $350. It comes with 2 year warranty. It might be $100 more expensive. But you do feel better. The depreciation difference is very little($100/ 24months ~ $4). The other thing is that I am sending it to the data centre for them to setup. So if something wrong with the "used" masterswitch. It would be a pain.
StarGate 05-03-2002, 11:53 PM We use several AP9211 with 9060 SMTP Management Card. We buy them for 200-250$ from ebay.
