View Full Version : Need Web Design for Portal site
bpoppa 04-30-2002, 11:26 PM Hello webmasters,
I am in need of a 1-page web design (template) that will be used on a portal website. I am looking for designs like pixelbricks and 2advanced. I know those are top designs and cost lots of $$, but I also know there are a lot of very talented web designers on this bored that are looking for work.
Now, I do not have too much money to spend on this....if you are still very interested in helping me out, pm me and give me a rough price quote and then we can talk. I have a price range in mind. I will definitely give props on the site to the designer, along with a banner or small icon linking to their site.
Thanks!
Jim
Azaloth 05-01-2002, 03:46 AM *laughs* You're looking for a design like 2advanced or pixelbrick but don't want to spend a lot of money. Not to be rude but I am surely not the only one who finds this hilarious. Sorry if this seems like a flame, that's not my intention, it's just that I'm sick of people thinking that designers will create incredible, top of the line sites that require hours upon hours of grueling work for a few bucks and "props' on someone's website.
Good design is a rare commodity and an incredible skill, asking people who design/develope websites for a living to create $20,000+ websites for you out of the kindness of their hearts just doesn't make sense to me.
Do people go into the local Best Buy and say "you know I only have $20 but I'd really like to buy that $2000 BOSE surround sound setup, how about you cut me a deal and I'll tell my friends how cool you are?"
Anyway, I'm sorry that this ended up in your thread, I just get very frustrated with people expecting top of the industry quality at bargain-bin prices.
Freelancing isn't easy but without it smaller companies would get reemed terribly, please show us freelancers some respect and in turn we will be there when you want a nice template for $100 instead of $1000 dollars (which is what a place like pixelkbrick would charge).
Again, I appologize to you Jim, this isn't aimed solely at you, more at board-goers in general. Don't get me wrong I love these forums, I get a nice, steady flow of business from these forums, but I am tired of seeing people who want high-quality designs for almost nothing. If you want the best, be prepared to offer something of equal value in return.

Very nicely said. I've been thinking the same thing for awhile. It's ridiculis all the 'design me a site for free hosting' posts or the 'if you design me a site, i will give you a cookie' :-) lol

bpoppa 05-01-2002, 08:42 AM Azoloth....you are right and I know this as stated in my original post.
Personally, I am happy not to be able to afford someone like yourself, to be honest your arrogance in your post is a very big turn-off for any potential clients reading this post.
Quick update....I have gotten responses from a few very talented freelancers offering to do the work I need for around 200 dollars....

If the person(s) spends more than 2 days on your design work I would link them till they die.
Anything over two days and you are being "Donated To"
Andyc 05-01-2002, 09:09 AM Azaloth is hardly being arrogant, he is being truthful. People always want "Cutting edge" or "Hard Hitting" designs for nothing.
From what I hear Pixelbrick charges around $4000 for a template based site and I have no idea what 2Advanced charges. I guarantee you someone that charges you $200 will not come up with a design that even compares.

NumLock 05-01-2002, 01:48 PM hey, its a portal site isn't it? so why do you need such graphical sites like those done by pixel and 2adv.
divinetruth 05-01-2002, 08:00 PM *will do your work on 2 conditions
1) you will send me hot, busty, blonde women
2) i dont have to work
hehe just kidding around
bpoppa 05-01-2002, 08:43 PM Hello everyone,
Well I now realize I should think much more before I post something. I know that asking for a great design for little money is kinda dumb, but where is the hurt in asking?
I apologize to you all for wasting your time in reading my post and assure it will not happen again.
Azaloth: My apologies for calling you arrogant, that was rude of me. I just kinda get defensive when someone bashes what I say or do as I am sure most of us would.
Later,
Jim
Azaloth 05-01-2002, 09:25 PM No problem Jim,
I certainly wasn't trying to start some sort of juvenile flame war here, my post was just in lieu of pointing out the way many of us designers feel when people request our services and aren't prepared to offer appealing compensation in exchange.
Everyone wants their website to be as gorgeous as 2advanced.com, hell I'd give anything to be able to create a site like that from scratch.
While it may seem harmless to post asking for a quality design like that for very meager compensation, it makes some people feel devalued.
I wish you the best of luck with your site, there are many great designers who post here who I'm sure would gladly make you a nice template for around $100-200 but if you're expecting charity work that's of the quality of 2advanced.com you're just waiting to be dissapointed. That's all I was really trying to say.
Thanks Jim and I really do hope your site turns out nicely.
