I forgot to renew one of my domains it only expired 3 days ago and now I have to pay Enom $20 + minimum 1 year registration fee.
That must be the way of making their extra cash.

This is very normal for registrars. In fact wouldn't you do the same thing in their position? If they dropped the domain right away then you'd go somewhere else and grab it up possibly. Aplus.net has a $10 charge on names. The fact that you want the domain back enables them to have the bargaining power. Expiration dates on domains should be taken as serious as Christmas. Don't forget them! Don't expect a reminder email either!

Yes I agree with clemzonguy.
But commercially seen, eddie will probably pay the $20 and the fee for another year of registration=> comes to $30 total.
He's gone be unsatisfied.
He's gone move out to another registrar and pay another $10 for a new year that is added.
He's gone transfer all his other domain names.
So, infact that registrar is loosing quite some profit over the next months/years. And a bad name.
But every registrar does it? I am not so sure, because I was in an identical situation with anotehr registrar and they didn't bother about the fee.

Actually, I disagree that this is common practice. There are plenty of Registrars who do not charge you to renew within their grace period. It doesn't cost the Registrar any more to renew your domain three days after it expires than it does to renew it 3 days beforehand.
The Registrar should give you a 45 day grace period, since he gets a 45 day grace period from the Registry effectively at no charge. ICANN has recommended this as a requirement. It's one of the few ICANN decisions that I have agreed with recently.
If I were this customer, I would pay, renew, and then transfer in 45 days - taking all my domains with me to a new home.

ps I do agree with paying attention and renewing your domain before it expires however - and yes, you should expect email from your Registrar - assuming you have kept your admin contact information up to date. It's an ICANN requirement.

bulkregister.com gives 30 - 45 days grace period and they never charge re-activation free :)
although i'm x-bulkregister reseller and an enom reseller at the moment but this $20 is a killer for most customers which made us to wait untill the domain is dropped and re-register it to avoid that $20/dom

Scary. What happens if somebody else manages to register it before you re-register your domain. Ouch!

this is what enom told me but in case of high value domains/customers we usually inform the customer to renew 1 month in advance otherwise they will have to pay the reactivation fee :)
