View Full Version : Perfect Place for a datacenter
fractiousws 04-30-2002, 02:35 PM What would be your idea of the most perfect conditions for a datacenter? I think where I am from (newfoundland) would be perfect for a data center for the following reasons.
- Cool weather, it never gets over 30 degrees celsius
- No natural disasters (no tornados, no hurricanes, no nothing)
- Low crime rate
- Cheap land
The only thing is there are big snowstorms in the winter (I mean lots of snow...we still got snow on the ground),and no fiber because the demand is not high at all. :bawling:
richy 04-30-2002, 02:56 PM i suggest my house :) roll in some fat pipes and watch those cyrix 333 servers pump out those pages.

What would be your idea of the most perfect conditions for a datacenter? Heaven. :)
Seriously though ...
I think data center should be located where:
1. The backbone is hot
2. The place is free or minimum natural disaster (specially earth quake, volcano and tornado)
3. Close to other technological building
Weather is one of the factors as well, but since a good data center should create its own weather system inside, the surrounding weather may not greatly affect the data center (unless it's under extreem hot/cold for a long period of time).

And those are the three main reasons why people choose the North-East US for datacenters :D

Newfoundland? I don't even know where that is, but I can't imagine that there are many fat reliable lines over there too which are required for a good datacenter :)
I'd say some place near New York/Jersey, or pretty much anywhere on the east coast.

Yeah, not many people do. Some people even accuse me of making up the name:rolleyes:
It is a Island located in Canada. See attatched file.
KDAWebServices 04-30-2002, 07:10 PM Ideally you want to be located near a landing point for a trans-atlantic link, and have as little hostile weather as possible. Europe makes for good datacentres as the weather is pretty stable, and depending on where you are, there are good connections to the USA and to Asia.
I actually knew just about where Newfoundland was.
RobsPics 04-30-2002, 07:51 PM free beers to anyone who knows where "Labrador" is

Isn't Labrador the breed of my dog?? :D :D
Where's my beer...
BTW... This is where Labrador (http://www.gov.nf.ca/nfld&lab/location.htm) is... The larger mainland half of Newfoundland
fractiousws 04-30-2002, 08:12 PM Acually Newfoundland and Labrador is one place. They call it Newfoundland & Labrador :)
fractiousws 04-30-2002, 08:13 PM oh yeah, wheres my beer

yep, it just rains all year round. Or maybe thats just Scotland.
richy 04-30-2002, 09:18 PM nope englands the same :)
i think we should definately go for centralising all networks in the uk, or more accurately my house:) i can provide 24 7 coffee with access to scalectrix and curry. our expert monitoring systems (me wandering past on the way to the toilet every few hours) will help optimise uptime, and we can expand (buy the house next door) to accomodate as many servers as you want. our air con (leaving the back door open) keeps the air at a steady - 15 with wind chill. biometric (my housemate checking the spyhole) entry techniques prevent unauthorised access (except via the back door).
the uk provides excellent weather stability, you dont need to dig up roads, just follow the pot holes in the roads. as long as your repeaters are waterproof your fine ;)
lol id like to see some serious bandwidth coming into the uk, the internet is pretty centralised on the states, the uk would provide a nice middle ground between europe and the usa.
ps i had 2 labrador's when i was a lad. does this help any? can i have an oc3 ? please?
weeps 04-30-2002, 09:40 PM toronto, ontario would be a good place...

actually im from hamilton, ontario.. toronto is just a bigger place. :-)
I hear Florida is a good place for a data center.

Thats what a screen door is for :D

It's the BEST :D
I was actually not kidding, in our new DC (in construction) every time I look outside what is to be my window, there is allways an alligator sunbathing (we have a big lake in the back of the buiding)
He's on guard :D
mdrussell 05-02-2002, 09:10 AM I heard alligators are rather partial to large black electrical cables :D
And alligators are always in a 'duck' position, ready to attack everyone who comes near. And I heard that they are also fast runners! :)
TimPD 05-02-2002, 10:51 AM Kentucky is a perfect place the wheather is excellent here and at least there isn't any rednecks here LOL. I honestly can't find a data center anywhere in Kentucky or TN. LOL at Carlos just make sure you don't go out there and let them eat you haha. When that Data Center is ready Carlos I want come tour it .:)

Yeah, we hope it pays the landlord a visit when it's time to pay the rent :D

unless theyre double hard arsed bartsards i doubt it would be something theyd develop a taste for lol. s & m alligators lol
hunthosting 05-02-2002, 11:05 PM How about this for an ideal place for a Data Center:
USDCO - Underground Secure Data Center Operations (http://www.usdco.com)
I got a call from them the other day...quite a unique set-up to say the least. Can't wait to go for a tour next time I head to the west side of the state (Michigan).
What do you folks think?
smacx 05-03-2002, 05:50 PM Man thats cool, it's like a bunker
too bad they dont have an interactive tour on their site...
Wow! Looks like $$$ to me :)

Nope, no snow here.. ;)
Common misconception about Denver.. Denver itself doesn't get that much snow.. the mountains get most of it... prime world class skiing about 1 hour away.. hehe
well, except for now, cause they are all closed for the season..
Anyway..
Laterz,
Dennis
champmac 05-05-2002, 06:21 AM Scandinavia would be the perfect location, but probabely to expensive. Not exactly known for having low taxes :D
Mirco 05-05-2002, 10:07 AM I like our alps :)
