Hi. I’ve just built my first site - www.richardnicholson.com (http://www.richardnicholson.com) (I’m a photographer and it’s my online portfolio). It’s currently hosted on my free BTinternet webspace, via the domain name I’ve registered with 123-Reg. I need to find a proper host as BT have told me that whilst I can receive email addressed to my new address - info (or whatever) @richardnicholson.com - I can’t reply using this address. My site is very simple, so I don’t have any complicated requirements of a web host. However there is one thing that I do need: easily digestible site statistics. The information I’m most interested in is how people navigate my site once they’ve got there (which pictures do they look at? how long do they stay?)

- Is this type of statistic easy to come by?
- Do most hosts offer the same statistics package?
- What is Webalizer, or Analog?
- Is it better to use a third party resource? (n.b. I don’t want any counters, logos etc. on my site)
- Will I have to paste code into all my pages to get detailed feedback?

[Other requirements: fast reliable connections, no more than 10 quid a month, well-established company, password protection (maybe), possibly a form, mac compatible (if that’s an issue???)]

I’ve been checking this and other forums for the last few hours and have come up with 3 possibilities that might suit a newbie like me - what do you reckon?

Webfusion.
Supanames.
NetWeaver.

Thanks for any advice.

Richard

I can fix your e-mail problems... If you are using Outlook, then you can tell it to use a "reply-to" address, which goes into the e-mail header and tells the reciever's e-mail client to send e-mail to that address when they reply. You can tell Outlook to use any e-mail address that you want.

You just have to use your ISP's SMTP server.

That still wont let him recive e-mail from his domain though, he needs a new pop account like mail.domain.com SMTP bit is right though:)

I have sent you an e-mail

aol ran the same scam. run your own smtp mx resolution. its actually far easier then it sounds, just use argosoft from download.com i think i wrote some instructions for it somewhere but its about 6 simple steps to install and you can then send emails using your address.

webalizer is the stats package i see most, its fairly simple. its competant, easy to use and understand. nice breakdown by month week day etc and pretty graphs to match the tables of figures. possibly your best bet is to get a 30 day trial and just see how it goes.

Well, I'm confused about this email thing.

I have 2 ISPs, BT and Virgin. I can only send Virgin email by dialling Virgin, and BT mail by dialling BT. And I can't seem to send from info@richardnicholson.com by dialling either ISP. Some have said I just need to set up OE correctly (I'm using OE on a Mac). But this is what BT told me:

'I am sorry to inform that our SMTP (sending) mail servers are locked to mail being sent with another ISPs domain. This is the case with almost all ISPS and is not subject to change unfortunately. You will of course still be available to receive your POP3 (incoming messages from any ISP or e-mail service that uses this protocol.

To send mail using your Virgin or other account, you will require a dial-up connection to their service, with the account set up in your e-mail client software.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.'

So what gives? Will getting a proper host (as opposed to 123 Reg) resolve this issue? Or do I need a new ISP?

Thanks for any help

Richard

what bt are saying is they wont let you send mail thru their smtp server without validation, so in other words using their mail acount. this is to stop spam. you can get round this by using your own smtp service. 123 reg arent really part of the problem, transfering your domain to another host is one route that would fix your problem but if you dont want to spend any more then there are other routes.
