View Full Version : Got my Blackberry...now what? (Software suggestions)

Okay, I just got a Blackberry 7250 (Any Canadians out there? Telus has a deal where you get a 7250 for $49 with a 3 year contract...mine needed to be renewed, so the timing was great!)

I have enough of a client base now that I am missing alot of e-mails when I am away. The Blackberry will cover my e-mail needs, and allow access to cPanel and WHM in emergencies.

Now what I need is: the most reccomended SSH software, and anything else that you find beneficial. I'm ready to load it up, so any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I somehow dont think you'll be accessing CPanel/WHM from your blackberry :) (give it a go, I somehow dont see it happening, haven't really used https on mine, but speeds for http browsing are far sluggish to get you anywhere in an emergency/service outage situation).

Idokoro is probably the best SSH program to use with your blackberry, its by far the fastest, and most effective (but it's not free unfortunately).

Well, part of the deal was unlimited e-mail and data for three months, so I'll have a chance to test the speed and load times.

With an alternate theme for the two programs (WHM/cPanel) I was thinking of creating a seperate user to access them with a theme that contains no images. If that is not possible, then a theme whose images are inaccessible, creating quick load times (quicker, anyway).

SSH is my biggest concern besides e-mail. I will check that prog you suggested.

Anyone else with a Blackberry who has attempted cPanel/WHM or any other web based script?

When I used a Blackberry I found browsing webpages to be annoying and I highly doubt cPanel/WHM are going to be accessible via that small of a screen. As I recall I never tried to load WHM or cPanel.

Let us know how it turns out.

On my Treo with a very small data plan I have just bookmarked the exact cPanel pages I need - server status, restart Apache, etc. Turn off the graphics and you can actually get stuff done.

What is UP with data plans in Canada - $$$50 a month for two floppies worth of data?!? It's about the same as I used to pay CompuServe back in 1986!

Remember not to let the Crackberry rule your life. It's quite sad to see the Crackberry zombies at airports and places. :borg: Make some filters so only important emails go to it.

I much prefer my Treo "non-push" emails where I actually have to retrieve messages rather than have them pour in like phone calls.

I have a Nokia 9300 Comunicator with Blackberry Support

Best of both worlds really, BB for my email instant delivery etc

Then fully compatable big screen browsing so i can cpanel etc. :)

For my 7230 blackberry i use verichat on it and its very good (messenger software) i use that to keep in touch with my guys ....

Its like everything else in Canada, it just costs more. Thats about the only thing holding me back from getting a BB or treo are the data plans its too expensive to justify right now. If it was like $60 for a decent plan I would replace my cell phone but now it has to be like $80 and up for something decent.

I'm curious to see how well you can access your cpanel with the BB, I haven't heard to many good things about the web access of the BB.

You're right about the crazy data costs...I'm going to use this 3 months unlimited for all it's worth.

I will give reviews of web access, etc.

I remembered you were commenting on high data costs. Some phones without wifi can still use a computer's internet connection via bluetooth (WM03/05 and PalmOS are supported.. Blackberry I don't know.)

I'd also get shapeservices Mobile Instant Messanger. You get AIM, MSN, Jabber, ICQ, etc...

Umm browsing web pages using EDGE from Rogers is great. I had the previous model that did not use Edge and ya it wasn't fun browsing sites.

Also, be careful when using programs like IM if they are not officially released by RIM because they won't make efficient use of bandwidth and you'll get a bill at the end of the month that you won't be happy with. So far only Yahoo is out, and AIM is somewhat supported through WAP.

Rogers data plans:
1.5MB $15
3MB $25
7MB $40
15MB $60
100MB $100
The contents of one CD $1900
The contents of one DVD $11,800
The contents of my laptop harddrive $245,860

Uh yeah. That's "great"!

Rogers data plans dont apply to blackberris though (unfortunately).

1/2mb - $25/mo
1mb - $40/mo
unlimited*** - $60/mo

If you've never used a blackberry though, you cant possibly understand what this means (your concept of data usage, etc. is not going to provide you with an understanding of how blackberries work, because its not like other cell phones, etc.).

Generally the average user should be able to get by on the 1mbps plan, give or take. My peak usage was ~9mbps, typical usage is between 1.3 and 2 megs of data, blackberry compression is nothing to scoff at to say the least (the 9 meg month was me forgetting the phone was in ssh, running "top -s2" for a few days in the background, and downloading random images to test stuff on the 'net).

I personally get the 'unlimited' provided to me by the company I'm employed by: You won't be WHM/Cpaneling it around but everything you can do via whm/cpanel can be handled via SSH with little or no trouble at all.

Note: a cell phone/blackberry accessible whm/cpanel theme would be a great idea though but SSH > *.

Note: I'd recommend setting up a few shell scripts for the command commands you expect to be doing - as typing is fine on the blackberry but it can get repetitive for certain things!

Note: do I leave enough notes or what?
Sometimes I wonder if I'm a 12 year old girl trapped in a man's body.. always passing notes around in class!

I currently use a blackberry 7105t from t-mobile (USA) and I have unlimited web traffic. I have used it to login to cpanel and also found a free SSH client that works. There is just one problem with the SSH client, you have to allow clear text passwords on some OSs. I have loged into WHM/cPanel many times and I have no problems at all.

The free ssh client is midpssh and works great.

Hope this helps.

PM me if you have any questions.

I'll second midpssh, I use it on my razor and it's very usable with macros and such for repetitive tasks

Actually, that's only on the Treo - the Blackberry stops at 50MB of data (there's actually a whole movement to get the 100MB for $100 package to apply to the Blackberries on HowardForums.com started by a forum member by the username Mark Rejhon).

Considering the "conditioning" that the telco's provide for the blackberries is *many* times more complex, and expensive then the conditioning provided for the other wireless devices (treo's, etc.) I fail to see why customers expect pricing to be flat across the board. 50MB of data on the blackberry will get you a LOT more emails then 100mb of data on the treo for example.

Yes, this is true - however not everyone uses their Blackberry *just* for the e-mail. Many people use it to browse the web from it, tether, go on IM networks, etc., etc. If you leave VeriChat running in the background, connected for 1 full day - thats about 1MB of data right there.

Hi,

I have a 7250 on Bell here in Canada. Unfortunately Bell doesn't support TCP/IP, so I am unable to do SSH, etc (I did try!).

You might want to be careful about the "unlimited". Make sure you read the small print, most providers have a cap and charge you $$$ for every MB you go over.

The speed on Bell is about 100 Kbits/s, so it only takes a few seconds to load a web page. The Blackberry is so great for email I don't know if I could live without. I've closed quite a few deals on it :)

I think midpssh is the way to go. I also find Google Mobile (Google earth for handhelds) to be very helpful with roadmaps, directions, etc.

Regards,
Jeff Wickenheiser

BTW - Got my 7250 for $0 with 3 yr contract. Paying just over $100 / month for unlimited data (Bell recently removed the cap), 350 minutes airetime, voicemail, caller id, etc.

Which is indeed why you should be using apps specifically optimized for your handheld.

1 MB / day isn't bad

I'm not familiar with VeriChat admittedly, but the only way it should be doing 1MB of data, is if its receiving/sending almost 1,000,000 characters a day, which is far more then most people chat (unless its an IRC client and you're joining a channel with 500 active chatters granted).

Very true, although I would suppose it is constantly updating who is online, etc.

I use verichat day in day out on my Blackberry. I spend about 250 a month on GPRS data, its stupidly expensive at the moment. That 250 includes the voda 3g card i use a lot also. (in the car hurtling down the M1 at the moment on the GPRS) :) (and no im not driving ...)
