My current host (lowesthosting.com) uses this software:

SERVER_SOFTWARE:
Apache/1.3.22 (Unix) mod_gzip/1.3.19.1a mod_perl/1.26 mod_throttle/2.11 PHP/4.1.0 FrontPage/4.0.4.3 mod_ssl/2.8.5 OpenSSL/0.9.6b

Can somebody tell me whether this is newer or older software? And what is the effect of newer or older software?

Thanks.

(By the way, I really like lowesthosting.com. I have two accounts with them now and they provide quick, honest, customer service!)

Apache/1.3.22=old
mod_gzip/1.3.19.1a=new
mod_perl/1.26=new
mod_throttle/2.11=old
FrontPage/4.0.4.3=old (frontpage 2000)
PHP/4.1.0=old, contains security holes
mod_ssl/2.8.5=old
OpenSSL/0.9.6b=new

Currently from a search I found, the most recent versions:
Apache/2.0.35 (http://httpd.apache.org/) - mod_gzip/1.3.19.1a (http://freshmeat.net/projects/mod_gzip/?topic_id=90) - mod_perl1.26 (http://perl.apache.org/) - mod_throttle/3.1.2 (http://www.snert.com/Software/mod_throttle/) - php/4.2.0 (http://www.php.net) - Frontpage/5.0.2.2623 (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnservext/html/fpse02unix.asp) - mod_ssl/2.8.8 (http://www.modssl.org/) - OpenSSL/0.9.6c (http://www.openssl.org/)

Read up on the sites for each and you will see if there are any security issues relating to older versions, if you feel the security patch or update is crucial I'd bring it up with my host to make sure they know and are up-to-date.

I wouldn't be too concerned about Apache 1.3.22

I believe the latest version from 1.x is 1.3.23......

Version 2.0 was just released within the past couple of weeks. I wouldn't expect too many hosts to have this up and running yet (including ourselves) due to the time required for testing and incorporation into thier automated systems.
