OK, XP was great until last night. I've had it running on my main workstation for 6 months, no problems whatsoever. Until now. Now my machine no longer boots and I get this lovely message:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

No problem, look it up on MS's site and I get this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307545

Which is somewhat helpful, except I don't have a Win XP disk. I have the restore disks from my system's manufacturer.

Which by the way I restored on a spare hard disk, just so I could get to the data on my main disk - no go. I get the same error restoring from the CD's to another hard disk.

So, now I have the original hard disk back in the machine, and I've been trying to boot to a floppy to look at the hard disk. But, the HD is formatted to NTFS, so my handy Win ME and MSDOS boot disks cannot see the NTFS hard drive! (Screaming AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!)

So, I'm pretty much hosed and I cannot think of more options. (Save buying another Win XP license, just to get the damn Win XP disk I should have gotten with my new system.) Basically all I can do at this point is wipe the drive and try to install Win NT or Win 95, which are the only other OS's I have... Neither are good options.

Suggestions? Please???

Thanks - Brian

check out this link for instructions on how to get winxp booted via floppy, then follow MS's instructions as normal :)
