View Full Version : I think RS is listening...
bteeter 04-29-2002, 10:21 AM I know there have been a lot of complaints here about RackShack's support, but I've been quite pleased thus far.
Case in point, I just put in a reboot request. It was acknowledged in 3 minutes, and the system was rebooted and up within 15. I don't know that I could ask for much more than that!
Keep up the good work guys (and gals) and I'll keep buying. :-)
Take care,
Brian
okihost 04-29-2002, 11:41 AM I agree.. As far as RS reboot times they are 1000x better than they were 6 months ago mine usually never take more that 30 minutes or so to get a reboot done.. Now they just need to work on the support team a little and have the actually check there work before sending a fixed reply.. But overall I would say RS support is definately better..
Web Master 2 04-30-2002, 02:13 AM I was tired of phoning people asking for a button to be pushed and 30 minutes later, it was still not done.
RS is always very responsive.
I don't see why rackshack doesn't just install remote reboot scripts that power cycles the actual power port. It's so much easier that way and they could save money on support saying probably 1/4 of their calls are "Hey can you reboot my box?"
meballard 04-30-2002, 06:17 PM AFAIK, RS normally reboots using the three finger salute method, which assuming your system hasn't completely frozen, helps to ensure a clean reboot.
porcupine 04-30-2002, 07:45 PM Jic, they probably dont install APC's because thats a lot of extra work for a company that has none. I could see on their most expensive servers offering that as an option, but for everyone else, that would be expensive, and a lot of work (not to mention, i doubt getting like 500 apc's would be easy work). Each apc has to be configured, have all the logins/pw's set, etc. Probably more work then setting up a box is for them (im betting they get a box, ghost it, with some fancy software/setup) then go sit it in its place and turn it on.
and meballard, how do they do the ctrl + alt + del im wondering (im assuming thats what you meant by three finger), because i've never seen monitors/keyboards in their pictures, i would have guessed someone runs around with a pad and a bunch of server numbers on it and flicks on and off servers all day :D
meballard 04-30-2002, 10:26 PM I have no idea how they actually do it, the reason I believe they do it that way is from hearing of a time where someone was logged onto their server when their server was restarted, and it said it was restarting from the console, and considering that person probably did change their root password...
and yes, Ctrl-Alt-Delete=three finger salute
Zutroy 04-30-2002, 10:30 PM I'd assume they're using KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) boxes. One box can control a whole rack of servers using just one mouse, one monitor, and one keyboard.
porcupine 04-30-2002, 10:31 PM Not a clue then, I know a lot of boxes i have, and have worked with will crash if you unplug the keyboard/mouse and plug it back in sometimes, thats why im a little surprised if they do that, not only that, but it sounds like such a pain to do it that way if the box is already crashed :)

Wouldn't that be extremely expensive for 4000 servers though? Not only the boxes (ones that fit a large amount of servers) but also for all the cable'ing required to do it..... not only that, but i don't see any of those cables in their pictures... so i doubt thats it :)
meballard 04-30-2002, 11:24 PM I've seen the mouse be finicky when unplugging and plugging it back in, but I personally usually haven't had a problem with doing that with keyboards (and they don't exactly need to connect a mouse to restart the system).
Patrick-EV1 05-01-2002, 10:41 AM It's all about flying around the floor with a monitor and keyboard on a cart. :) It may be more work than hitting the switch but it's safer for the machine and the data on it.
I also have never had a home computer crash to the point where it's not accessable via console, but i've also never had my home computer loaded with 500 active sites.. lol
