um, if they paid $500 for that they got royally screwed. You can do that with just about any CMS on the planet. You just need to put a bit of time and effort into it. Look at the following:

Joomla (first choice)
e107
Drupal
Mambo
Typo3
CPG Nuke (absolute last resort)
Do not look at PHPNuke, don't even think about it.

All that site has is a common 3 column setup with most freeware CMSs deploy by default. They changed the CSS so theat the layout fit their needs and went from there with graphics, fonts and content publishing. If you need forum software, stick with Simple Machines (free), IPB or vBulletin (both paid if I recall correctly but vB for sure is paid). All three forum packages also have their own CMS frontends as well.

Joomla/Mambo is seems very complicated. Is e107 easy to tame?

Joomla looks complicated? please tell me that's a joke? I'm a network engineer/security consultant @ Cisco. I'm an idiot when it comes to web design and content management. I just can't wrap my brain around it. But I can get Joomla to do just about anything I want w/o having to css and php my brain silly...which I couldn't do anyways. There are so many more smarter people than me with CSS, HTML, PHP and site design but I don't have to worry about that w/ Joomla.

as for e107, I really liked it but I had so many errors on my site I had to ditch it. Apparently e107 doesn't like certain combinations of software (in my case it was unhappy w/ my selection of PHP and MySQL) so I couldn't get very far. It's a bit more simplistic but with any amount of design skills, I don't see why a Joomla and e107 site couldn't look identical.

The fact is, ANY CMS is going to require time and effort on your end. You are going to have to redesign the front page to look like you want and then add additional blocks and populate them using tags and content as necessary. No one can tell you which is the best CMS *for you* but the ones I mentioned are the best reviews and the most used on the net behind PHP Puke...er Nuke. Nuke is a gaping maw of security issues and piss poor server performance followed by a weekly round of security updates that break plugins and causing your shared host to eventually kick you off because Puke takes too much CPU time/memory. This I recommend you stay away from it.

If you prefer a flat file database instead of going into the complications of setting up DBs and stuff and if you want something lite with all the good and needed features I would suggest you use Limbo. Its a lite version of Mambo and I personally use it for 2 of my sites.

I tried Mambo, xoops and Drupal but I liked http://www.limbo-cms.com/

You can also look up here http://www.opensourcecms.com/ you will find a lot of choices and reviews on each. Might find some to meet your choice. You will have to wet your hands on some see with which you are comfortable.

e107 is hard to install some times but it's great when used.:peace:

e107 is good. but DO NOT EVER use PHPNuke. It is terrible, slow, and full of security holes. If I was to ever touch PHPNuke, it would be on a local server at my end, but even then I wouldn't use it. e107 is pretty cool, I like it and I've used it on plenty of site. I also feel it is the easiest to use.

I use e107 and I like it. There's support forums for it and some free themes available.
