View Full Version : What causes slow downs?

Quite frequently, my hosts page serving gets really bogged down. When I look at the server stats in cpanel, there's red buttons saying "server load 100%" and "memory usage at 100%"

The host claims it's someone hogging resources or too many cron jobs running.

Question: Is the host's claim true and more, what can be done about it?

Thanks...fewcoin

It could be true. It just takes one badly coded php script to bog the server down.

There's not much that can be done on your side of the fence, unless the script belongs to you.

The claim is plausable, what can be done?

- Better Anti-Spam / Fraud measures (many spammers place fraudulent orders)
- Better resource management - Deligate more cpu time to sql/apache less to exim
- Put less people on each server

Well if you are getting that all the time and its not your account I would move somewhere else. Your website probably runs incredibly slow. Are you running any scripts on your account ?

Hello,

Your host's claims are more then plausable, still that is no excuse on your host's part. You are paying for services and you need to be able to use those. It is no excuse for a host to tell you that someone is hogging the server, they need to solve those problems and reimburse you in some way if this situation has affected your online presence.

If that is a constant behavior and there seems to be no remedy I would also consider moving.

In the end of the day it is your sole decision thorugh :-D.

Good luck in the New Year from HD.

Ok thanks, when enough people post on their forums about the slow downs, (and it's always this one server), they get it working back up to speed shortly. They said they had to hunt down the offending site and shut it down, LOL

Yes, it is frustrating though. You finish writing a post on a blog and when you go to publish, it just hangs and you can't even logout.

I'll log how many times this happens and decide about moving.

Thanks!

hello,

Offending websites happen often unfortunately, hopefully your host responds quick enough to save your website from any downtime/unusuable time.

Best of luck.

Ask them to be migrated to another server to avoid the issue all together. Let us know how it goes.

A frequent problem like that is very irritating. The host should be able to hunt down an offending account quickly, and if they don't I think it is time to move on.
Sure, you could try to resolve the issue by making them move the site to another server. But who knows if that helps....

I agree, if they cannot find the account causing the issues on the server, you should move on to a new web host.
